Description:

Ah, to describe an app in two words... Free Books is just that- Free Books!
We take 23,469 classic books, package them up, and make them available to download and read with our fully featured ereader. All for less than a cup of coffee.
Free Books unlocks a world of public domain content, allowing you to acquire the great books of human history. Letters of leaders, the collected works of geniuses, the finest Victorian novels, the plays of Shakespeare, the philosophy of Seneca and Marcus Aurelius, the autobiographies of Benjamin Franklin and Andrew Carnegie. It's all here, along with tens of thousands of other books. And all, might we belabor the point, absolutely free.
While you won't find recent books like Twilight or Harry Potter, you will find a mindboggling amount of classic titles from throughout the ages.
To get these books it really is as simple as a tap- in seconds you'll be reading with our lightning fast, built-in ereader. Done reading? No worries- we'll save your place with automatic bookmarking, and return to your spot when you pull up the app again. Alternatively, we can email it to you so you can read the book on your computer or your Kindle. Either way, the book is yours to read anywhere, online or offline.
23,469 of the greatest books in human history, accessible with the tap of your finger. Free.
If you have any questions or suggestions don't hesitate to drop us a line at hello@freebooksapp.com- that's what we're here for!
Also, we've had a few questions about pricing- to be clear, all books in the collection are included with your purchase. Once you pay for the application every single piece of content within the app is free- unlike a lot of other apps we aren't a store, we're a buffet, and the app purchase is your wristband to pig out on shrimp. And by shrimp, we mean books like, you know, Shakespeare. Tasty, tasty morsels of Shakespeare.
* Free Books requires internet access to download books, but after you download them you can read anywhere, even when you're not online.

I'll never be stranded with nothing to read again!  rating of Free Books - 23,469 classics for less than a cup of coffee.

I love love this app! While I'll always prefer reading books the traditional way, this is a fantastic alternative for those times when I find myself in public with time on my hands and no reading material. They have a good selection and the option to browse by category for those of us not sure of what we want to read. Also great is their option to change font size and color scheme so you can adjust the look to whatever will be easiest on the eyes. Looks like I'll finally be able to check off some books from my reading list!

Excellent implementation of access to free books from the Gutenberg Project plus other sources.  rating of Free Books - 23,469 classics for less than a cup of coffee.

All the five star reviews describe the strengths. I have had no technical difficulties, crashes or failures. I don't understand the complaints, particularly the one that says the product with 150 books is better and all those offered by Free Books are uninteresting, since all 150 books offered by that seller are on Free Books. Even the Art of War for which some sellers are charging $10. is on Free Books. My only annoyances are some Gutenberg books have several pages of boiler plate to scroll past. And spacing is off in some text when the source used hard returns. The absence of fonts to indicate headings in sometimes an inconvenience. This can be especially bothersome when reading poetry. If spacing is too bothersome, it is easy to find something else to read. Don't miss Cory Doctorow. Is this where I am supposed to start my review? At the end of someone else's with no indication a new review is starting? Very confusing.

Well like many others I never write reviews, and I have some great apps on my iPhone! But this has to be the greatest value app ever! I really enjoy Reading the classics and so this is perfect, so many books are available and all for the cost of £1.19. Thank you to whoever explained that this is courtesy of the Gutenberg project, you can browse the books first if you're unsure about buying the app.Word of caution, the majority of the books are pre 1923 and so if you're looking for the latest Harry Potters I fear you'll be disappointed. Fantastic application and has to get 5 stars, hope this helps.

Should've tried this first....  rating of Free Books - 23,469 classics for less than a cup of coffee.

What a great app! I've tried a few book apps (including some I've paid for) but this is the best yet. I found the controls simple, responsive and within minutes i was flicking through the pages like a regular book. Font size adjustment should be suitable for all and the colour adjustment options are a nice touch too. Its great for reading in bed too, because you don't need a light on & you dont lose your page when you fall asleep! If you're looking for the latest Stephen King novel then look elsewhere. If you want a simple, practical way to read all those books you promised yourself you'd read one day then get them here. For free. When e readers become common place & affordable, they can do a lot worse than use this as a template.....

Great value app featuring great CLASSIC (old) books.  rating of Free Books - 23,469 classics for less than a cup of coffee.

I think it's unfair in the extreme for reviewers to give this app low marks because all the books are classics. Of course they are! How else could they be available for this price? This app is very good value because it provides additional features to the free ones. There are no adverts as in Wattpad, for example. The interface is pleasantly functional, and so far it has proved stable, with no crashes.
The chief reason I bought this app to go alongside Stanza (which will always remain in a class of it's own and has not yet come near to being beaten), is the ability to email books to you as well as read them on your phone. This is ideal for me since it removes several steps in getting books onto my non-mac-compatible Sony e-reader. That to me is worth the minimal price.
My advice to everyone is that this is a good value and highly functional app. Stanza should be downloaded first, but if you want the unique features of this app buy it. And please ignore the stupid reviews.

How can I *not* give it 5 stars - wonderful value  rating of Free Books - 23,469 classics for less than a cup of coffee.

No, the iPhone isn't the world's best book-reading device; and no, you can't fiddle with fonts and layout or anything else cool.
But come on - 23K plus books for pocket money - it's a wonder of modern technology. The app works, the books are great, it's easy enough to read, and I love it.
In case you're wondering, all the books come via the Gutenberg Project (look it up), and they're free online to. But this app provides a great way to access them on your iPhone/iPod Touch. Well done guys.
And thanks.

I have had some trouble getting all the features to work but I still love this app-- no more reading outdated magazines in my doctor"s office and no more trashy Hollywood gossip (also outdated) in my hairdresser 's- -no matter where I am I am able to pull out an engrossing read that always remembers where I left off! It also solved something that was a huge problem with my last husband and current partner -- reading in bed and falling asleep with the light on - the phone" s light doesn t keep him awake and it goes out when I stop turning the pages ! Simple , guilt free, cost free, eco friendly, and I get to fill time crossing all those books that I meant to read when " I had the time "-- it has actually improved the quality of my life and I did not have to even stand up let alone eat fibre to enjoy the benefits.

Now that with the latest updates issues of font size and occasional crashes have been fully and satisfactorily resolved this is the only app for booklovers. Highly recommended. It is by far the best and easiest way to read and access the thousands of books in Project Gutenberg.I like very much the fact that books can also be sent quickly to my computer in pdf format, allowing me to do word searches.

I think it's a really great app, almost perfectly executed. I would like to see a little bit of detail on every book, however. I loved that it was easy to use in-book, and you could send the book to your email as well. Might want to consider renaming the app. Freebooks may seem a little misleading to some buyers. Perhaps something such as ArchiveBooks or the Archive might be more fitting. But otherwise, great job guys. Keep up the great work.

I'm not much into the new literature, not much Imagination all seem the same repeat of stuff. Where can you find books on history of tea making and Edgar Allen Poe all in one nice package. It's simple and to the point and for those who want more, go spend your 299 bucks on a kindle I'm sticking with this app. I prefer common sense logical literature any day over mass produced fantasy induced rubish.  just mu opinion.

This is a wonderful app because with it I have access to literature wherever I go. I usually pack around at least one or two books with me; now I don't have to. I cherish this app, it's one that I use all the time and always go back to because there is such selection and such a variety of material that one is never left without some amazing classic piece of literature to read. I would love to see even more books added to the list, especially fiction, fanstasy, romance, and perhaps a few plays.

In the coffee shop as I read these books, day after day ( Horror, Mystery and others, some by big name authors) I realize I PAID MORE FOR MY COFFEE !!! This is one app WELL WORTH BUYING! I'll probably never buy another book again! It's gonna take a while just to see what "gems" I already have in my library, which is ALWAYS in my pocket or hand! Adjust the brightness and the Font size. It remembers where you left off, I never miss a phone call and it has always loaded & worked correct! ONE OF THE BEST! DEFINITELY A MUST! I've never done as much reading, because I never liked being stuck with an awkward book when I go out, and now I never will. SAVE TREES - BUY THIS APP !!! I used to envy people who had big libraries. Now for a lousy $2 - 23000+ books in my pocket, they envy me! I don't have to go home to look something up!

This is one of my first experieces with the ebook technology and it has been very satisfying not only with the broad selection of titles but also with the ease of the interface. It is still not the same feel as a real book, but I am sure this is just a matter of time for one to get used to the new human object interface. I travel a lot and this is a God sent reading system. Keep up the good work! Happy New Year 2010 to all!

In one of the reviews I read, the person spoke of not being able to skip around in the books and that she had to read it from front to back. That is not correct. If you look at the page examples, at the bottom of the first one there is a "slide bar" that looks like the music volume controls, you can use that to skip anywhere in the text. This is a really cool app, if you like to read!!! Especially cool if you like to read classics. Also has some interesting literature (nonfiction), as well as the bible, etc. Enjoy!

I love this app! I would have paid considerably more for it, as it's value is quite frankly, priceless. For less than $2, I now have a vast library of classics that would have cost me a small fortune to obtain on my own. I find the app very comfortable to read, as I can change the font size and hue of the page quite easily. I noticed that some reviewers had a hard time not being able to scroll, but it does not bother me at all. I just got the app a few hours ago, and I've already read The Diary of Eve & The Diary of Adam by Mark Twain, and am settling into Moby Dick now. Thank you so very much to the inventors of this app for sharing it with the world so affordably. What an amazing and priceless gift; the gift of classic literature! Thank you again!

I read the reviews and was about to decide not to download this application. I did not follow my instints and to my surprise I found myself downloading all kind of books. I have not had se experience as those that tell you it freez your iPod. I have no idea what they do to freez it. But I downloaded book of around 1900 pages and I haven't experience any freez. Fort the price it is worth the money. $1.99 is nothing. Hope you enjoy it as I am enjoying it.
