Description:
** Listed in "The Nine Best iPhone Apps For Readers" - Associated Content ** "This application developed by Josh Pressnell is a must have for any book lover." "At $1.99, it's easier and more fun than an excel file or card catalogue!" ** 3.5 Mice in MacWorld ** "iBookshelf’s simplicity is a virtue." __________________________ iBookshelf is your personal portable library. Books are displayed ordered by title, author, genre, and status. You can search for books in your library, and enter a "loan status" to remember who you loaned the book to or borrowed it from. A new book can be entered automatically (enter ISBN and remaining data is loaded from the internet) or manually. If you load the data from the internet, the book cover image is loaded as well. It will even tell you where you can buy the book and how much it costs! Features: - Enter the ISBN and tap load to retrieve book data from the internet (live barcode scanning with Red Laser SDK) - Enter the title and/or author and tap load (next to the title field) to look up the ISBN and load remaining data from the internet - Save all your books in a convenient library - See your book covers on your iPod/iPhone - Track book loans - Rate your books - Find places to buy books and the price at each vendor - Search the database by multiple space-separated keywords - Tilt your iPod to landscape view and view your book covers in "shelf view" mode. - Backup and restore your library to our online backup server - View your backed up booklist at ipod.pressnells.net - Email backup files (CSV or binary) to a location of your choice. - Import your own data (CSV format) or backup files. - Not sure what to read? While in cover view, shake iPod and a random book will be chosen for you. - Read/Unread status is displayed in the main lists. - While editing an entry, tap on the cover image to search the internet for additional cover image options. - Set the cover image using the iPod camera (if available) - Optionally enable data pulled from ISBNDB.com (requires setup of free account) and Open Library in the iPod Settings app. - Set default values and list font size in iPod settings app. **** NOTE: All of my data is pulled from publicly accessible internet sites and is NOT using any direct API. This means a few things to you, my customer. Because I'm not relying on API data, you will always have information available to you. However, because my data sources change their websites from time to time and public websites are not always consistent, particular items may provide unexpected results. This will cause my application to close. Rather than providing negative reviews, please send me examples of items that cause the application to close and I will happily update my code to accept them. **** **** Think I can do something better? Would a slightly different or new capability increase your rating or motivate you to give me a positive review? Please email me. I'm always open to suggestions! ****

Updated review By: Khbowl - Dec 5, 2009 Version: 1.7 Just completed entering over 700 books in my inventory. Most were found with no problems. The issues requested previously were corrected and upon emailing about a backup question, I received immediate response from Josh with answers. App is greatly improved. New suggestions were possibly for a desktop version and the ability to sync between desktop and iPhone. Thanks for the updates. Bookshelf works well but a couple of changes would make it better. First make the number optional. Some older books don't have a number and since it's required you can't enter the older book onto the list. Second the ability to edit after you save a book. Some books loaded with the author as the title or the web link as the genre which of course is competely wrong. If you catch it while loading it can be fixed but if you don't see it you can't edit later but rather must delete and reenter that book. Also the ability to edit genres would be great. They seem to assign genres by random some time and really could be consolidated. Last the ability to add a desription like a series name would be nice.
Love It! Strongly recommend for someone with lots of books! By: LuvsHorror - Aug 17, 2009 Version: 1.4 I have more than a thousand books and sometimes buy ones I already own. Always wanted an easy and convenient way to keep a list of my books. This is it! It's going to take forever to enter all my books, but it's fun seeing the ones I haven't read in a while. I love my Ipod Touch and I love this app. Thanks!!! Just be aware, sometimes the app rejects ISBN numbers and crashes, or is sometimes slow. I'm sure this will be worked out in later updates. Still worth it, though.
Definitely worth it! By: Locke786 - Dec 21, 2009 Version: 1.8 To the reviewer complaining about paying for scanning, get real! The author of this app didn't write the scanning code, he had to buy it (notice he's using Red Laser). He's giving us, the users, the choice as to whether we want to pay extra to have that capability or not. He COULD have just raised the price for everyone and made scanning free. I went ahead and bought it and it works great!! I'm looking forward to future updates.... Keep up the good work!!!
Dates. Dates. Dates. Please? By: Grocery Girl - Dec 31, 2009 Version: 1.10 Found this yesterday and I have begun with my data entry. So far it's a good start and almost exactly what I have been looking for. I didn't realize that I should have done last name first for authors. (Please let me delete the mistakes.) I read several different series' of books. I'd like a place to ID if the book is part of a series - Kurt Wallender, Lucas Davenport, Alex Cross, Kinsey Milhone etc.....and the ability to sort by this list would be great. (to fill in the installments I am missing from a series would be icing on the cake!!) The date in which the book was published, when I read it and/or bought it would be EXACTLY what I have been looking for. Great job so far, I'll continue to figure out how to make it work until the updates come out. EH
Great app! By: Yourfamilyphotgrapher - Oct 15, 2009 Version: 1.5 Hey there! It's your favorite photographer! ;) I found this app and love it. Runs smooth so far. :)Constructive feedback, possibly add a search engine capability for the books that are recommended to the user but they don't have an author or title. Also a compare prices if it is something they want. I do really like the search your own library feature because I have a LOT of books an this app make it easy so I don't re-purchase something! Good job Josh!!!!

The best way to check my library By: Mckeephoto - Nov 2, 2009 Version: 1.6 Update: just updated and love the new changes. This app just keeps getting easier to use. Keep up the good work!**********************I have looked at a few of these database things for keeping track of which books I have, want or have loaned out. IMHO this one is the best. Easy to use, easy to search, easy to update. And, I love fanning thru the collection iTunes cover shot style.Yes, there are a couple of things I would like changed, like making the genre an editable preset choice. But, the other libraries I looked at weren't even that good.To cap it off, I sent Josh, the developer, a question. It was answered courteously, quickly and with a sense of humor. My kind of guy and my kind of software.
Luv me this app! By: Bsm76 - Dec 30, 2009 Version: 1.9 Great app! Hv many books and this app helps me stay organized. Would luv to be able to edit or remove some genres and authors tho. Also, when you want to select or add an author manually, it loads VERY slowly - possibly due to so many authors listed? Can be time consuming if you hv more than one book by the same author that needs to be selected manually. Overall great app tho. Hv been needing something like this. Luv the scanner too!
Great app!! By: FisiB - Dec 27, 2009 Version: 1.9 I looked at lots of other book tracking apps, but I think this is the one that best met my requirements. I did pay the extra .99 for the scanner, and am pleased that I did. It certainly makes input easier. I am able to go back in and change the cover photo by using the camera after the entry has been completed, which was helpful. There are a couple of things that would make this app 5 stars.First, I have lots of older books which don't have ISBN numbers, and I haven't been able to add them. It would be nice if the ISBN was optional.Second, It would be great if when searching by Status it would differentiate between read and not read books.Thirdly, when a book is logged as borrowed, the app doesn't allow me to add a location. My friends and I swap books frequently, so it would be nice to be able to keep track of where I've put them.Fourth I'd love room to add dates for when I purchased, read, borrowed, and most importantly returned borrowed books. Finally, I like numbers, so a book count would be great too...but that's just me!Great app though.
The best in the category (v1.8) By: Borsho - Dec 18, 2009 Version: 1.8 This is the best application for maintaining the records of a personal library that I’ve seen so far. It has all those useful feature that I couldn’t find in any other single application. It does have some problems, but Josh has been very responsive to all my problem request. The was a crash on 1.7 in ‘Email List’, which is now fixed on v1.8. Kudos to Josh! Here are things from my wish-list, which will make it even better:- the search for title, author, etc., should work as the search in iPone Contacts, where the list of results is filtered to the mating set of characters as you type (removing blank rows as well)- do not switch to book cover view when iPone is oriented horizontally while editing a book, since first - it’s losing all the edits, second - the horizontal view will be very helpful for editing comments- make the book cover view more functional, i.e. jump to the book details when a cover is selected- a desktop version of the application could come handy

almost perfect By: hjsilversonic - Nov 16, 2009 Version: 1.6 I really like this app. I have been wanting one like it for some time. I would like however to be able to type in the info on my pc if I wanted. This is great if I'm out and see book I want to purchase, but for adding all my hundreds of books at home, it would be easier to type on a keyboard. Also, and maybe this is just me, but I read a lot of books from the library. I would like to be able to note and rate library books so that I didn't check them out again and also be able to note if I would like to own them myself in the future. As others have said I have old books with no ISBN that I would like to put in. Also in author view, why are the titles of a particular author not alphabetical within the author listing?

The best library manager By: BookloverTX - Nov 30, 2009 Version: 1.7 Started out pretty good, and has just gotten better. The developer continues to listen to his user base and add functions that are useful, not just flashy. For those of us with lots of books, I haven't seen another application that comes close.
I've been waiting By: P1U - Jan 5, 2010 Version: 1.10 I have been waiting for an app to handle all that iBookshelf does. The scanning is excellent, the lookup is accurate, and the vitual bookshelf is cool. Great and effective app. Would love to see defaults for location and hardcover. Also would like a quick add button that would go straight to the scan. However, even without those additions, this is a 5 star app.

Works great with quick customer Serv. By: Phink - May 29, 2009 Version: 1.1 Developer answered my email question in a matter of minutes plus it works great.

The best library tracker in the app store By: Jendayi781 - Dec 30, 2009 Version: 1.9 The updates just keep making things better and better! This makes it easy to keep track of what's already in my library so I don't buy it again. I also share books with my co-workers so it's easy to keep track of who has what. I'm hoping one day for a 'check out/check in' date and possibly 'started/finished' fields for our book club trackings.
Needed to tell everyone ! By: amf_002 - Dec 29, 2009 Version: 1.9 Do i own this book already???? This app lists all your books and in one setting, shows you the cover. Its like stanging in front of your bookshelf. Loved it so much, i needed to write a review.
Awesome app! By: Kuro41 - Dec 22, 2009 Version: 1.9 The only thing that I would like to change is the ability to add cover art from camera roll/pictures after the book has been saved
