ONE OF TIME MAGAZINE'S TOP TEN APPS OF THE YEAR ----------------------------------------- Start now and receive: Lil’ comics by Tom Gauld, Lisa Hanawalt, Matt Furie. PLUS Raw Water, a story by Wells Tower. ----------------------------------------- Stories. Short films. Interviews. Comics. Readings. Bad advice. All delivered straight to your iPhone. No more lonely moments. HOW IT WORKS Each week you’ll receive exclusive multimedia — stories, films, readings, interviews, art — plus new humor pieces from our website everyday. Your app purchase gets you six months of weekly Small Chair content. We’ll use Push Notifications to let you know each time a new piece is ready. CONTRIBUTORS SO FAR Spike Jonze, Chris Ware, Jonathan Ames, Maurice Sendak, Zimbabwean prisoners, Wells Tower, Catherine Keener, Joe Loya, Bad wizards, Jessica Anthony, Adam Levin, A deep-sea spatulator and more. WE MADE AN APP It’s true. We did. And here it is: The Small Chair, a weekly selection from all branches of the McSweeney’s family. One week you might receive a story from the upcoming Quarterly, the next week an interview from the Believer, the next a short film from a future Wholphin. Occasionally, it might be a song, an art portfolio, who knows. None of this material will be available online and it’s all pretty sure to be good stuff. The app will also deliver the daily humor from our Internet Tendency, specially formatted for the iPhone, along with news, updates, and announce-ments. This feature will remain active and free, even if your Small Chair subscription expires. No longer will T-Pain be your only salvation on trains, during lunch, and through all the other empty gaps in a day. Allow the Small Chair to fill your moments of solitude, moments of together-ness, moments of intolerable boredom. Your app purchase includes the first six months of weekly excitement — a half-year of surprises, all delivered straight to your pocket. McSWEENEY'S McSweeney’s is an independent publishing house based in San Francisco. Our converted laundromat is home to the Quarterly (mostly short fiction), the Believer (monthly interviews, reviews, columns, and essays), Wholphin (DVD quarterly of short films by Miranda July, Spike Jonze, Alexander Payne, and others), and books by authors including Nick Hornby, William Vollmann, and Michael Chabon. Reviews:
Very nearly perfect… By: nothingistrue - Oct 31, 2009 Version: 1.0 What a wonderful app, absolutely true to the McSweeney's ethic & aesthetic. The content is extremely compelling of course, while the treatment within the app itself is lovely and fun. I use this app constantly, as there is always new content pushed out, and the short form of McSweeney's writing suits the quick iPhone usage model perfectly. Would like to see linking/sharing within the app, and better saving of the state of position within short articles between starts.
My favorite iPhone app, period. By: Kevin Ho - Nov 13, 2009 Version: 1.0 Articles like AvacadoTheftbook FAQ & The Brocyclopedia have brought me many a hearty laugh that makes this a $5.99 very, very well spent. The design and interface of the app is very sleek and classy as well, and while not all the Small Chaor entries have entirely caught my interest, it's clear that a lot of work has goe into producing them, so I appreciate their efforts for that.If you like reading and love to laugh, then this app was practically made for you. Get it already!
Waiting for the day.. By: Prof Xiam - Sep 22, 2009 Version: 1.0 I've been waiting for the day when I could re-carve my horribly overpriced Apple device in the image of pure cultural grace. Now that time is upon me. As a young, failing, slowly starving writer I worry about the purchases I make. So, like a surgeon I cut to save and this app could well be 7.99 per six hours and I would buy it again. It's well designed. It has this freshness to it like mail that isn't a student loan bill. It has a nice option for font size so I can read it while pretending to listen to my roommate lecture me on why I shouldn't " eat from his garden ". Also, I think owning it betters my chance of getting published by them , right? Right?
Elegant, convenient, and delightful. By: Rainhead - Sep 22, 2009 Version: 1.0 The design is elegant, straight-forward, and thoughtful. The content can be consumed rapidly and conveniently to inject that familiar McSweeney's inspirational, lighthearted spirit into your day just when you need it most. I haven't had this little morsel in my posession for long enough to change my life, but I expect it will become my new companion while waiting in airports or tucked into bed on a Sunday morning.
Fantastic! By: >>---zing> - Sep 23, 2009 Version: 1.0 McSweeney's on the iPhone? At first this sounds like an unlikely couple, yet after using it makes perfect sense. The price is right and I actually like that it's a paid service which no doubt will translate into great premium content. The interface is simple and classy. I haven't had an opportunity to experience the push notifications but that's cool, too. Looks good ...can't wait to see what arrives each week.
Simply Superb By: ViktorWalters - Sep 30, 2009 Version: 1.0 The more superb implementation of the iPhone app store as a method of disseminating information and at the same time introducing a whole new demographic to your readership, McSweeney's is an excellent addition to anyone's app collection. One will soon find themselves sharing it with others and exhorting one's friends to subscribe as well. Another leap in the advancement of the Information Revolution and a proof-of-concept par excellence.
Beautiful By: Bruce Fraser - 26-Sep-2009 Version: 1.0 At last a literary app with class and style as well as promising content. The price of the app gives you a weekly content. This week a short story (as in over 100 pages long, but not a novel), next week a short new film. It is a subscription for 6 months, but you can extend it for another 6 months after that for £2.99). On top of that you get daily content from the internet site - and that continues free. If you are interested in modern new literature then this app based on the McSweeney's Quarterly Review is an absolute steal at the price. I highly recommend it.
Simple, clean, easy to use By: Ethanlechcharles - 25-Sep-2009 Version: 1.0 A very nice, simple app that delivers fantastic content. Works perfectly, no bugs. Interface is very attractive and functional, including the text interface.
Smart and beautiful By: dvddunc - 3-Oct-2009 Version: 1.0 Beautiful minimal interface surfaces engaging original content - one of a kind. Joy, joy.
McSweeney's on my iPhone = awesome By: mausd - 10-Oct-2009 Version: 1.0 I've had this app for a couple of weeks now and the content is definitely worth the price. The app itself is well designed, apparently bug free, and works exactly as advertised. Highly recommended.
Swell! By: Raymond Brigleb - Nov 4, 2009 Version: 1.0 Bought this for a flight and loved it. I then replaced my iPhone, and it stopped working. The developer kindly tracked me down and helped me fix the problem, and now it works great again. Very happy, I've always enjoyed reading McSweeney's publications.

Of course. By: M.D.R. - Sep 22, 2009 Version: 1.0 What a delight to find that Timothy McSweeney is expanding his media-empire to the iPhone. I cannot wait to see what comes from this little chair. These are some of the most creative (and hilarious) people publishing out there and I am very happy to have them on my person from now on.
