What more can I say?
Oh right, in regards to the control scheme, it's designed that way for a reason: to be difficult. Side scrolling shooting games ala Ikiruga were designed to make players say to themselves, DAMN, this is hard! Luckily, the designers made the starting level way easy. For those having difficulty with the controls: don't remove your finger from the screen until you are in a safe place away from fire. Sweeping your finger over enemies will lock on with your missiles. So you sweep your finger over incoming enemies (or hold your finger on one large enemy), and you will see the bar at the top of the screen indicating missiles drop to 0. Then without lifting your finger, you move your guy out of harms way by sweeping your finger to the appropriate section of sky. You let go and the missiles fly. Then you repeat. The difficulty is in locking on in between dodges since later levels feature more and more fire. Oh, and the one hit one death element is classic shooter style! There aren't even any obstacles in this game! It used to be that if you touch the ceiling or ground and you'd be dead. Yeah, what do you know about R-Type?
Lack of enemies is definitely a valid gripe, though. I agree on that point. Wish there were more!

In reply to the comment below, I think you need to play it more, because I have only played it for 5 minutes and there is nothing wrong with the way you navigate and shoot. It's all very easy, all you have to do, is put your finger over the enemy, then release, and it will shoot. It's so simple. So unless your brain dead, i don't know what your doing wrong.
Anyway, This Game Is brilliant, it's free so why not give it a go ?

DON'T add tilt controls or multitouch! Please!

Shoot'em-ups require fine grained controls and the control scheme you created is just perfect, because it is VERY simple and intuitive, so leave it as is. Also, you can always create other games to test other control schemes.
My suggestions for improvement include, in order of importance:
- more distinct stages. The easy way: change the colors of the background and/or enemies, make the boss' tail smaller on the first stages, etc.; the hard way: more enemies, ground, etc. Also, there's no need to stop the looping when you beat all stages, just like the old arcade cabinets.
- make the charged shot more useful
- remove the ship's tail from the hitbox
- limited number of lives/continues, or an energy meter
- saving records, online would be nice too
- powerups
Anyway, 5-stars for the great experience and for being free. I'd definitely pay for an improved version (well, I'd pay $0.99 for it now, but that's a secret).

The Name alone evokes 5 Stars...

UPDATE: (drooling) This game is FRIGGIN SWEET!!!! Such raw satisfaction launching those homing missles limitlessly, blowing up enemy space hoards... I couldn't sleep last night!!!! If I were to make a suggestion, it would be an option to control the ship either with accelerometer or have two separate touch mechanisms: left finger scrolls up/down to move ship, right finger for firing.... I actually think having separate controls like that is harder than the current method, so it'd be nice to have more of a challenge like that and an option for familiar control. Still, I can't get over the name!!!! That's like bonus 20 stars!

I like very much how this game makes use of the touch application to fire on the enemy ships with a barrage of never ending missles. Now granted, the play is repetitive for every level and the enemies don't change (it does get harder tho the higher you progress). But I can only assume that's because this is version 1.0, so we can only expect to see a wide variety of great things to be added to this game in the near future. So ignore the nay-sayers and download this free app.

This game is probably the best I have played yet. I recommend it highly best controls yet too!!! This one won't be deleted anytime soon. Would def pay for it if it wasn't free which is awesome right there. Don't listen to the bad reviews try it 4 urself, it's free y not. I think this the first review I ever wrote but felt it totally necessary. :) good job guys keep 'em comin I'll keep downloadin!!

This is a great game. It looks nice and it's challenging and addicting. Although... The gameplay is repetetive. It's the same thing over and over except at each stage there are more enemies... but in the same attack patterns every time. It's also really annoying that you die with 1 shot, and it gets really REALLY hard at stage 5. It's a great game don't get me wrong but what makes it challenging also makes it a little too frustrating.

Another great free app that puts those expensive failures to shame. How people continue to say they would pay more for something where the price is already set is beyond me. Hey everybody I want to pay more for things. De de de. Thank you for putting out a quality product for free. Or atleast giving us a trial to find out if the game that we are considering purchasing is worth it. Inexpensive games rule. Thank you for the great FREE app. Your the best!

I gave Space Deadbeef five stars because of all the whiners giving low stars. This is an original and creative game that builds through redundancy becoming more challenging as the game progresses. It has quality graphics, audio options, and replay value. It is true Space Deadbeef could be improved to add more challenges and more options or customizing, but on a whole the game is fine the way it is now. I would also like to thank the developer for putting this product out there for all to download for free and without advertisements either! Other free games have been weighed measured and found wanting. The bar for free games had just been raised!

This is an excellent app. For one that's free, it meets very high standards. The only problems I have about this game are, as you have probably heard from other reviewers, is that:1. The game lacks sufficient controls. I often end up dying trying to move the ship up to dodge a laser, only to accidentally touch my ship and fire my weapon instead. If you could make it so that you can tilt your iPhone to manouevre, that would be great. 2. The game is too repetitive. If you could add more different levels and an ugrading system or virtual shop where you could buy upgrades, that would be greatly appreciated. 3. You should either have a certain number of lives or a health bar. It kinda sucks when your ship accidentally gets hit and you die, especially when you almost defeat the boss. This would make it a bit easier. Other than that, this game is exceptionally good for one that is free. This app is definitely the best space shooter app I've seen in the app store. Get these updates and you'll have a real winner for sure. Thanks :)

For a free game, you can't pass out on this. Yes, it could use more levels, enemies, and weapons, but I'm sure they will release a newer version (which will probably cost some cash) with all that.
I played the game for about 20 minutes straight and didn't run into bugs, but a few minutes ago, I was playing music on my iPod Touch and tried starting the game. This ended up completely freezing my iPod (until I plugged it into my Mac).

This is a spot on R-Type kinda game and is very addictive although gets repetative. Excellent in short sessions! Some ideas which I hope will be implemented in future updates are: a bigger variety of enemies/locations, weapon upgrades, use tilt controls to move up and down and touch controls to shoot (moving while trying to shoot is a pain), and as someone suggested - upgrades to your ship would be awesome! Thanks for this amazing, free app! Looking forward to updates!

This is one of my very favorite games. Kudos I.D.P. There is only one problem i've seen in the game, Sometimes when I start up and start a level, the game will sometimes crash and close, taking me back to the home screen. It not that big of a deal, but it would be nice if it didn't do that. I had a nice I idea for a challege, Maybe there counld be a Speed Run, where you have a limited time to kill as many wave of Enemies as you can. But anyways this is a great game, Kudos I.D.P.

Space Deadbeef is without a doubt one of the best free games available for the iPhone or iPod touch. The graphics are simply beautiful, the gameplay is downright addicting, and it's better than most games that I've had to pay for. At first, I was amazed that this was a free game, most free games I get are only half the quality of this game, and are really shoddily done. However, this game doesn't show at all that it's a free game, it pretty much belongs in a league all of its own. Something that's invitation only, and in the furthest reaches of the galaxy.Okay, I'm rambling. But, if you want quality, you want Space Deadbeef.

This game is awesome! I have played many shootemup games and this one is definately one of the best. For all of the people complaining about the controls. Try playing any other shootemup games I bet the controls in this one will be a lot easier.Also a tip for anyone stuck. The bosses tail only shoots when you hit it in it's body or head. Continue shooting it in it's tail and you won't get shot at.

old school classic but with the fantastic graphics. Especially when your own ship, or another larger craft explodes. I dont mind dying just to see the amazi fiery death. haven't gotten too far in yet since i just bought the touch so there's alot to look at. It's good to see a free game that i would have gladly paid for. It's a real treat to see a publisher who put real work and gaming passion to make serious game. . and then hook it up for free. An extra star just for that. I give you 6 stars!
