Reviews:
Excellent AND free! By: Garry Robson - 25-Feb-2009 Version: 2.0.1 How do some of the fools here even understand their iPhones if they can't understand a brilliant and, let's not forget, free app such as this?
Listen, you jerks, it is not your private library, it is the equivalent of a radio station that plays music of similar genres to the artist you choose. I really don't see what is so difficult to grasp. My youngest got it in a few minutes and he's 13!.
So pay no attention to the very few negative comments here. They just don't understand this app. It is superb for music lovers especially for those who wish to continually expand their horizons. And it's free!
Excellent job guys.
Changed the way I listen to music By: OlegTrottsky - 05-Sep-2009 Version: 2.1.0 Love this app and in fact the whole last.fm experiance! Down loaded this first and thought it was good but once you've signed up to the service and started populating your profile it comes alive! Try downloading the last.fm program for your pc as well. It checks what you've been listening to on your iPod and adds these to your profile! Just type in an artist that suits your mood and some great tracks get streamed :)
Discover this app! By: custom_robot_unit - 24-Mar-2009 Version: 2.0.1 Ignore the bad reviews you will see, this app works almost the same as it does on any Mac or PC. Some people have written unjustified negative reviews about using an app they don't understand. This is a superb music discovery tool and is as intuitive to use as iTunes, once you've signed up for an account and learned how to use it I guarantee you'll be finding new bands all the time that might just become your new favourite. I've been using Last.fm for 3 years and this is a very welcome new way of accessing my account, so download it now and get discovering!
Awesome By: Jonny_K1337 - 24-Feb-2009 Version: 2.0.1 This app help me discover a whole load of new artists and songs. This app is brilliant! And it also adds the songs you play on it to your recently played on your last.fm profile.
Oh and to all the people with the bad reviews - The search for a station thing is NOT for listening to the preffered artist, it is so you can discover SIMILAR artists to the one you type in, the whole point is so that you can discover new music.
Truly Disruptive Potential By: Dennis Kim - Aug 12, 2008 Version: 1.0.1 The combination of the iPhone, the unlimited data plan, and Last.FM has tremendous potential to disproportionately promote independent artists over major label artists. 1. Enter a well known artist, and you get a playlist of well known artists. They'll be in the same major genre (e.g., Bill Frisell and Wayne Shorter), but they might have nothing to do with each other in terms of their sound, style, etc. But enter an indie group or artist, and you get a playlist of related indie artists, solo or collaborative projects, etc. For indie artists, the playlists are organized around listener characteristics (what listeners who like one group also like to listen to) and artist characteristics (solo and group projects, etc.) The result is that you get exposed to new music you are likely to enjoy, as long as you stick to indie artists. There's nothing wrong with using it for listening to your collection or to well known artists, but the service just works differently in each case. 2. Last.fm pushes information to the listener, unlike sources like Myspace, where you have to pull the information to you. 3. Internet radio gives you no substantial artist information; Pandora tells you why all the songs in your playlist are going to sound the same; Last.fm gives you artist bio and live performance information which each artist and lets you tag them for later use. 4. Again, if you are a fan of a major, well known artist, you know exactly where to look for touring information and you might have to plan in advance. For a small label or indie artist, there's a good chance you might not know that they are going to be playing in your neighborhood in a week or a couple months, and there's a good chance you'll end up seeing shows you wouldn't have thought to go to. 5. Like Pandora but unlike internet radio, it's commercial free. People need to get away from scrobbling and look at Last.fm on the iPhone as a way of exposing yourself to new music, to actively explore artist information, and to actually see live events. If you tag a song on your iPhone, when you get home to your computer or SqueezeBox or whatever, you can form a new station around that song and start scrobbling away. It invites more interaction and loads songs slower than Pandora, making it more time intensive and at times a real distraction from doing other things. But it has noticeably higher quality audio than Pandora, which is also more passive and less challenging to the listener than Last.FM. Pandora is good for background music, while Last.FM is better for being more actively engaged. Think of it this way: if you listen to Pandora, you might end up finding one song by an unfamiliar artist you really like and buying that song or the whole album. If you listen to Last.FM, you might hear 4 or 5 songs from the same artist or even the same album, end up tagging them all and then buying the album, and then seeing when they're performing in your area. This is not my only source of streaming music to my phone. I also use the Tuner app to get RadioIO and other internet radio, which I just happen to prefer to other offerings. I've had Last.FM in my house for a while and was never that impressed with it. But when it comes to hearing music by new artists, especially independent, small label artists, streamed directly to a media player with good sound quality that you're holding in your hand, checking out upcoming live performances while sitting in a coffee shop (and plugged into the wall outlet if possible), Last.FM appears to be the champion without much in the way of competition. Just to put this even more starkly, there are millions of new iPhones with unlimited data plans running around major cities in America and around the world right now, with millions more yet to be sold. But, there are only two commercial-free personalized streaming audio apps right now, for all those people. That's a huge marketplace, not so much for recorded music, which is almost chump change, but for live performance attendance, which is the vast proportion of artist income. If Last.FM keep picking up indie artists, things are going to get more interesting in the music industry.
Fantastic application, spoiled by reviewers and apple. By: bailystevens1 - 24-Feb-2009 Version: 2.0.1 These other reviewers are not getting the point of this application. Due to licensing issues last.fm can not play a song more than once otherwise they have to pay royalties. If it's 'random' choice likethis is they don't have to pay.
Also this app does not support scrobbling which is a shame..but thts apples fault or not allowing apps to run in the background. Basically; fantastic last.fm team keep going!
Awesome but... By: dannydethmetal. - 05-Aug-2009 Version: 2.1.0 I love this app seriously, use it pretty much 24/7 but they need to add a feature where you can read your profile notes. Obviously the app is for music but I do occasionally talk to people through notes on pages and I have to log onto the website to check them!
Also artists pages could do with some more content i.e you can look at the pictures and rate etc etc
It lacks a lot of the features from the website which I think they should work on including, to get better and better!
Love you last.fm ;)
Love this App!! By: Dj Vallé - 04-Aug-2009 Version: 2.1.0 One of the best iPhone Apps for sure. Use it most days when out and about or even at work. Plug it into yourhifi if you've got wifi and let it pick a plethora of artists and tracks. Also I great way to learn of new artists out there. Anyone who is dissing this coz they don't understand or appreciate how if works or how good it is to hear tracks similar to the artist they picked are stupid.... Must have App download now*********
I think it's pretty awesome By: Don1985 - 05-Apr-2009 Version: 2.0.1 I really don't know why people are mocking this for a slow buffer speed, I think you have to blame your network for that. Use it in wifi and it works great. It doesn't have every feature that lastfm has to offer but it does supply the main ones. One small feature I would appreciate would be different views in the calendar, iean option to view list. This is what introduced me to lastfm so I'm very pleased with this app.
Great App for discovering music By: ireviewiphone - 25-Jul-2009 Version: 2.1.0 This app is great! You can customise your own radio station and app adds in some recommendations that are quite good too! The radio works quite well on EDGE and 3G networks if you are out and about although buffering takes slightly longer than Wi-Fi but its not too bad. I use my iPhone with BOSE sounddock portable and when I select hi-quality streaming, the music is mindblowing! Highly recommended.
Excellent app, a must have freebie! By: Finepics - 22-Feb-2009 Version: 2.0.0 There seem to be a lot of criticsm but I think much of it misplaced. The concept is superb. I'm always on the lookout for new music so what a great way of listening to a specific genre to find something interesting. Full artist biog and weblinks are superb. For any music lover this is a must have app.
Not tried it without wireless yet, when it works perfectly, so I imagine 3g will stutter but that won't be the apps fault.
brilliant so far By: 27davado - 08-Oct-2009 Version: 2.1.0 I like fifties, early sixties music. So to be able to select the singers of that era, and to play them at a touch, is like a dream come true. I type in name of artist, and play songs from that artist, songs from similar artists. So far, has worked like a dream. Really excellent. Only twice has it dis connected, then only for a few seconds. Not often that a bargain comes along, that works as well as this, that is as user friendly. Terrific.
Amazing, life changing - I mean it! By: Curvedair1967 - 07-Oct-2009 Version: 2.1.0 I suppose the problem with giving an app away for free is that you're bound to get people impulse downloading with no clue regarding it's intended purpose -that seems to be the case with all the negative reviews I can see for this app. If you take the time to read the application description before installing you might realise that it's about discovering music based on your musical taste by way of selective geneology. It's truely life enriching if you are serious about music.
"Brilliant!" By: Oris9 - Feb 7, 2009 Version: 2.0.0 Not sure how others might rate this app BUT IF YOU ARE ALREADY a fan of LastFM and use it a fair amount you must download this app. I've now got my Lastfm "Library" and "Loved Tracks" with me at all times and the sound off the iPhone I just bought is solid and functionality simple and effective. Listening to new recommended music is also there and the ability to buy a song and add it to your iTunes library is simply an added bonus. Possibly one of the reasons I finally caved and got an iPhone is due to this app; I am very happy this application delivers and I can now take LastFm (solid music site for those who crave their tunes 24x7) with me anywhere I go.....Nice work!!!
so good! By: rpsxnu - Aug 5, 2009 Version: 2.1.0 i dont understand these negative reviews and one stars at all. this app is excellent. if you use last.fm, this is the best thing ever. THIS is 21st century... last fm on my iphone. the UI is great. at first glance, i thought it was too limited. but, as soon as i started using it, i think it is fantastic. honestly, i just used last.fm to track what i listen to and keep up to date on shows. but, with this, i am back into listening to the streaming radio tracks - as now i just pop it into my ipod stand connected to my stereo and dont have to be confined to the computer. if you use last.fm, using this app is a no brainer. good job!
Uh-mazing By: Notyraveragekid - Feb 1, 2009 Version: 2.0.0 This is what my touch was missing! I had up clue that this was an app and I LOVE it! I have it on my computer so j disk. Even need to thnk twice about getting it...80% of the songs it shows me r songs I actually like! Half my library is thanks to lastfm! Atop thinking and GET IT!!! It works better with a larger library though:)
Would be nice I'd u cud listen to it while yr doing other things on yr iPod though:(
Loyal Last.fm user since 2006! By: RyanVH - Jan 31, 2009 Version: 2.0.0 This is an amazing app! I love using last.fm since it opens me to many other bands that are similar to the ones I listen to.
There is only one problem I have with this app even though I know the change can't be made due to Apple's app rules. The problem is that there is no music scrobbler when you're not using the radio. When I had my iTouch jailbroken they had a very amazing last.fm scrobbler and I wish somehow Apple can let Last.fm do this.
Also people are complaining about how the radio doesn't have a pause button. Well as much as life would be easier with a pause button you have to remember that it's a "radio" hence it plays the present time and doesn't fallback
My username is MUSICisLIFE631 if anyone metalheads would like to add me =]

Superior to Pandora By: estaples - Jul 30, 2009 Version: 2.1.0 If you're familiar with the desktop versions of both services, you know that this is an emphatic understatement. I appreciate Pandora.com, but Last.fm has taken the Internet radio concept and run with it unlike any service I've ever seen.
You get the widest range of music, because indie artists can upload their tracks to appear right alongside the majors. ...And of course, you don't have to hear anything you don't want to hear--ban away or favorite what you wish. With scrobbling from my iTunes, Lala.com, AND Pandora libraries, as well as integration with the popular social networking sites, Lastfm.com can't be beat. Oh yeah, this app is pretty cool too. :)
Good, not as good as it's predecessor. By: The 1st Maverick - Jan 19, 2009 Version: 2.0.0 Before upgrading to the 2.0 software, I was able to try out the mobilescrobbler application, which was great! It allowed you to scribble the music you listen to on your iPhone iPod, as well as view your friends profiles. This new app looks a little bit nicer, however, it lacks a lot of the functionality of it's predecessor. As far as I can tell, it only scrobbles music you listen to with the app, and not music you listen to on the native iPhone player. It also doesn't display the basic information of your profile or your friends profiles, such as number of songs listened to, and name, place of origin, etc. Each of these features were available in the jailbreak app, and seem to have disappeared since.
Way better than Pandora By: Shank2001 - Jul 27, 2008 Version: 1.0.1 This application is wonderful. I love that it has bios about who are you listening to, and the sound quality is better than Pandora, on WiFi 3G and Edge, it does a better job of finding the music I like, and I like being able to listen more than once to the songs that I mark as loved. I love the concert listings as well. And you can SHARE songs with your contacts! I will probably never use Pandora again. For those of you giving this App 1 star because it does not Scrobble, you people are insane. I know you want that feature, but this program is so great even without that feature, it definitely deserves at least 4 stars. I am a Last FM convert. This app alone makes buying an iPhone or iTouch worth it!
