Kikanus  rating of Ocarina

After I waisted .99 on sonic boom I swore I would never buy another smule product. I lied to myself. After reading about 100 strait rave reviews and me being a musician I decided to give this one a chance. The verdict, this app is the s--t. If you already have played wind instraments you'll pick this up in seconds. It's far more accurate than other flute type apps i've tried. I mean you could actually be the guy in the band that plays the phone! No joke. Bottom line, the only people who will enjoy this are human beings so if your a human this apps made especially for you.

Harmonica of the 21st century!!  rating of Ocarina

Ocarina is so ingenious. I thought the Ocarina itself was groundbreaking enough until I discovered the world view, where you can hear what random people from around the world are playing on their Ocarinas. It is truly inapiring and very charming. I am now going to go and learn a bunch of songs to amuse my friends and complete strangers. I have never written a review here or on iTunes before, but this app made me pop that cherry. GRAB IT WHILE IT'S $.99!!!

Very impressive, easily worth $1  rating of Ocarina

To sum this up in very few words. A must for music lovers, simple yet extremely accurate tones and pitches. Very simple to play unlike a real ocarina and the iphone does a great job mimicing the way you play a real ocarina. My favorite app yet to have a fully functional instrument on my phone. Got to love playing along with your favorite video game music like Zelda or Final Fantasy. Or busting some hard rock Zeppelin harmonies. Love it. Thanks for smule for keeping it affordable, and the community for transcribing tabs. Thanks.

On the fast track to be the most popular app on the iPhone  rating of Ocarina
By: dgcaste - Nov 7, 2008
Version: 1.0
I do not review apps often. I use them, get bored, and toss them, even if I really liked the app.
The problem is that no one really had an incredibly imaginative way to leverage the iPhone's features. Sure, multitouch is cool, pinching and zooming is pretty neat, but there was always something missing.
Come the Ocarina app, and my previous impressions of the viability of the iPhone as an entertainment platform were blown out of the water. This is an awesome app. The keys are incredibly responsive, the sensitivity of the microphone is just right (needs some practice so you don't miss the microphone with the air blown from your mouth), and the interface is simple yet beautiful. The world navigator to see others playing is neat looking and pleasing to watch.
The social networking features are pretty neat, you can listen to other people in the world while they clumsily learn how to play the Ocarina. Every so often you'll come across someone that does it very well. I wish there was a way you could track a certain person, for example, if you stumbled upon someone that was especially good or creative.
However, the idea is better than the implementation. Not that it's improperly implemented, but some features are clearly missing. First, I think, there should be modifier keys for raising or dropping half a note from the currently selected one. Also, it would be very helpful if there was some on-screen feedback of what note is currently being pressed. This would help beginners out a lot. Something a little more advanced, there is clearly space for 6 or maybe even 8 buttons on the screen for more advanced players. I understand how things can get hairy, especially with the lack of tactile feedback. I am certain that this app's upcoming popularity will bring upon some nice updates. I, however, plan on informing the development team of my suggestions.
My wife and I are having TONS of fun with this thing. The youtube video of a man playing stairway to heaven on his guitar with the 4 ocarinas playing background is delicious.
This, however, has quickly become our favorite app and we plan to spend some time making music between each other, or perhaps she can complement my guitar.
For 99 cents (introductory, I believe), this is an app you HAVE to get. It can only get better with updates, and you can only get better with practice.

Great way to pass the time  rating of Ocarina
By: AJSpinDrift - 22-Nov-2008

I love this app. At first I struggled to figure it out, but the online help and music scores are excellent. I find it a great way to relax and pass some of the more boring moments in life.. waiting in the car for someone for example! It's not something I have braved playing in public, however it amazes everyone who I show it to and non iPhone users laugh in disbelief at just how cool it is. It's one of my most favourite apps.

Fantastic application  rating of Ocarina

This is an extremely well-executed musical instrument for the iPhone, imaginative in its conception and clean in its execution. One thing i've noticed--it works better if you keep your screen really clean. Also, like any instrument, it rewards practice. Even in an hour my playing improved.
I have two suggestions for the programmers that would really put it over the top: ability to select different tones or voices; ability to shift down an octave during a song.
Bravo!

Pretty cool actually  rating of Ocarina
By: viper_2_4 - 21-Mar-2009
Version: 1.3
Originally my brother mentioned this app to me, I thought it sounded pretty stupid...and to be honest I didn't want people trying it spitting at the bottom of my phone or something. However, I downloaded it eventually, and now its pretty much my favourite app on my phone. The instrument is pretty cool, but its the online community and the listing of songs that make it really fun. The online features are surprisingly really cool, listening to random people all over the world play is actually pretty cool, as well being able to access clips online. I think there is room for improvement, the software is kind of laggy at times, and menus are a little slow sometimes. However, overall its a very impressive app and I highly recommend downloading.

Genius. Pure genius. - Its funny only a couple or so months have come to pass since iPhone Apps were released into the world and I recal someone mocking the iPhone for not bring able to send picture sms messages. But the truth is this; As more and more Apps are released the further the iPhone pulls away from any other phone out there, so much so you have to say Who really cares if the iPhone is unable to send picture sms. This is currently the best iPhone App - Price: Arguably this should be more then 59p. - Bugs: None that I have found/noticed. App runns smoothly. - Design: Brilliant; The world map is somewhat Epic, as you can listen in as the whole world becomes a live musical stage of various performances. 10/10

Extremely fun and addicting  rating of Ocarina

I love this game!! I am not really into playing instuments that much but I decided to get this game and I'm very happy I did. It's pretty easy to learn thanks to their online help and songs chart and hundreds of songs to play. Once you start playing you will not want to put it down. My only concern is it's a battery hog which i guess is expected so make sure you have a charger near by. Overall awesome game with loads of fun!!

A real instrument  rating of Ocarina
By: Atanguay - Nov 6, 2008
Version: 1.0
I've played with many of the musical apps for the iPhone and this is the first that is like real instrument. I've played with pianos that are maybe a dozen keys, guitars with a couple of frets... They're all cute to play with for a couple of minutes, but you can't imagine playing an actual tune on them. But this works! It's subtle and responds to finesse. The site to guide you is very good also. I can't wait to see where this goes!

fun, entertaining and just "neat"  rating of Ocarina

I feel like Zelda! This is very cool and, like a previous reviewer, I don't usually post reviews and I most times install apps and then grow bored with them and delete them. Ocarina is hands-down the neatest app I've installed! It's just a lot of fun, it's pretty to look at and my 8 year old son loves playing it, too. When I pull out my iPhone and start it up, people always remark how neat it is...the phone AND Ocarina. Thanks for making this available.

Excellent!  rating of Ocarina

Very well thought out. Simple and powerful. Thank you for building such a great app! Couple of additions for future updates: - user adjustable fingering positions - amp/filter/lfo controls or a choice of preset instruments - record performance in order to overdub (possibly with other preset instruments) - metronome click sound - sync recorded performances to PC (nice to have as both Midi and Wav) Ok I'll shaddup with that wish list. It truly rocks as it is! Well done!

Incredible!!  rating of Ocarina

I felt like searching the app store to see if there was an ocarina playing program and came across this little gem. It is truly amazing and plays basically just like a real ocarina. The zelda mode is my favorite as I live playing songs from the game! $0.99 is a bargain for this amazing app!! If you like the ocarina or making music on the iPhone in a fun and realistic way, you will not regret buying this! Truly innovative and excellent.

It's amazing! Worth much more than $0.99!! Update: People are such idiots, don't listen to the non-believers, this is an amazing app and only if you have a ipod touch first gen or you hate all music and don't like making it, THEN you would avoid this app. Give it a try! Tip: Start off with amazing grace, that's what I did and that really got me into it, also try doing happy birthday at some of your family's birthdays. Don't let some songs get you down, alot of them are REALLY hard 

Load of Fun  rating of Ocarina
By: placematts - Dec 23, 2008

First off...yes, I am a HUGE Zelda fan. Now that I have that out of the way...
Simply put, this app delivers exactly what I would expect from an app of this sort. It (usually) plays very well, with the limitation being the skill and/or talent of the operator. There is a wide assortment of music available on Smule's website. Also, it's easy for me to play despite being a drummer, who also has no wind instrument experience.
If you're like me in that you enjoy music, enjoy playing music, and have just a bit of patience, then I believe you will likely find yourself enjoying this app as well.

(Practice makes) Perfect.  rating of Ocarina
By: judacris - 14-Nov-2008

Like playing any real instrument, it takes practice. Don't expect to become a maestro all at once. A good place to start practising would be the Smule Ocarina website, where there are plenty of score sheets of familiar songs to start with.
Holding the iPhone to play the Ocarina may feel awkward at first, but you'll get the hang of it. The Sound quality is excellent. The only trouble I seem to have is the multitouch detection of holding all 4 keys down on the Ocarina. Otherwise, an all-rounded, well-made application.

iPhone Ocarina is Made of Win  rating of Ocarina
By: BohemianCoast - 19-Nov-2008
Version: 1.0.2
It would be lovely, and well worth 59p, if it just accurately simulated an ocarina. Which it does. But you can change the key, so it simulates a whole bucketful of ocarinas, and you can change the mode, so you can play minor tunes, or pretend to be Zelda*. And then you realise that you can look online at ocarina players around the world, and listen to their tunes. It's really quite magical. Super fun, and great for showing your mates why your phone is cooler than theirs. Not that this works so well any more, cos most of my mates have iPhones too these days.
*yes, I know you're actually pretending to be Link. "Link" appears to be the number one name for an ocarina. Yes, you can name your ocarina. How cool is that?

Fantastic idea  rating of Ocarina
By: briebrite - Feb 19, 2009

I love my ocarina. I'm really picky about which apps I spend money on and I don't regret this one at all. The forum with the user-submitted sheet music is awesome. I also like the fact that once you create a smule account, you can record and archive your songs online and even invite people through email to listen to your music. I'm not sure if this app is for everyone, I mean, some people have short attention spans. But it is so user friendly and with some songs, you get that instant gratification and feel like a genius. Adding a way to play with headphones would be icing on the cake. I'm too shy to practice in public. LOVE IT!!!!!

First review  rating of Ocarina

This is the first Application I have reviewed, though I have tried many. Ocarina simply was the only application that actually made me write a review, it is that amazing. I won't go into detail of the functionality of the application as that is amply documented elsewhere. I will say that it is incredibly fun and addicting. If you want to witness what the iPhone can do Ocarina is the application for the job.

I hate to say this is now an instrument but it is! This little thing is soooooo cool. You can play melodies instantly. I find myself at work thinking about what song i will practice when i get home. It has a few bugs but im sure they will be fixed in the near future. The feature where you can listen to people playing around the world and send them kudos is friggin sweet! Definately worth the .99 cents. An impressive way to show off your iphone; especially if you can carry a tune.
