Description:
InstaMapper is a free real-time GPS tracking service. Use it to track an iPhone online, share your location with friends and family, and record tracks for later analysis. Free registration is required. See http://www.instamapper.com/iphone for more details. FEATURES - Track your phone on Google Maps from the Internet. Positions are updated as often as every 5 seconds. - Record up to 100,000 positions per device. - Embed a map with your current location on a web page, blog, or your Facebook profile page. - Export position data in CSV and KML formats. - Access data programmatically via an API. NOTES Because of limitations imposed on third-party applications by Apple, GPS Tracker must run in the foreground to transmit position data. Expect about 5 hours of continuous tracking on one battery charge. iPod Touch works only in some places in the US. Be sure to set the accuracy threshold to "Any" in settings. Brilliant! By: hgvdriver1969 - 07-Nov-2009 Version: 1.2.2 One of the best apps by far, I cannot believe it is free.I am an hgv driver and I use this app all the time, my family can see where I am at all times. I use it to review my route and find better routes and to plan an alternative, for the future.I cannot understand people giving this a low score!Just try it and when you see just how good it is, leave a positive review for it, they really do deserve it!Best app on my iPhone. Thanks guys!
It does what it says By: Glory.Man - Jul 29, 2009 Version: 1.2.2 This app is exactly what I've been looking for. Was pointed to it from komando.com. It's to be used to allow yourself or others to track trip progress or current location. Great for parents who want to track the youth group or scout trips. Good if you want family or corporate headquarters to track your travel or sales calls. As instructed, it requires free registration with instamapper.com. I love it! While people complain about the Apple limitation of having to have the application always open to work, mine still tracks me if I let the phone shut down (Auto-Lock) with the app still open.
Excellent App - Can have many more features By: Wrick - Jul 27, 2009 Version: 1.2.2 This app is exactly what I wanted - it tracks me in real-time (but I have to keep the app open on the phone which drains the battery) and I can let my friends see me on Google Maps on Facebook or on their site where I have been. The iPhone's GPS is bad indoors but it works great outdoors. Some points: 1. When it has no GPS lock, it just shows locating even when accuracy is as high as 20 m. The developer did not provide the user the option to send (approximate) position without GPS lock. 2. It buffers the last 100 positions in case you are offline but the GPS is working. This is neat - I wish it could buffer more. 3. I wish in place of "locating ... " it showed the actual accuracy and gave me the option to transmit data without GPS lock. 4. I also would like to see a trip feature where I can start and end trips and also see my friend's locations. Otherwise, I would give this app a 2 thumbs up.
Love this app By: tomandjennyp - Jan 15, 2009 Version: 1.2.2 This is one of my favorite apps. A couple of points: 1. I would agree it probably isn't a good app for the iPod Touch. 2. To those reviewers who say it won't work in sleep mode, that has been fixed now - it works just fine in sleep mode. 3. To those reviewers who complain it won't work in the background. That's true, but it is the limitation of the phone not the app. It makes it so you can't use it to always know where your phone is, but doesn't render the application useless. There are plenty of things you can do with the app even with Apple's background problem. All other apps have that same limitation. Things I love about the app: 1. I love the fact that it automatically updates my Facebook profile with my location. We went on a trip over the holidays. I started the app, put the phone to sleep and my family could get on Facebook whenever they wanted to know what our progress was and where we were. Of course they could also see that we were speeding! 2. I love the fact I can create unlimited tracks online and download them into Excel to track workouts or commutes or whatever. I have an excel spreadsheet that let's me easily see my pace while running (or biking or whatever) and monitor that pace over the whole length of the run. I have another one that shows me commute times and helps me pick the fastest routes (I spend 1 1/2 - 2 hours a day commuting so this is very nice). Download tracks and write a little spreadsheet and you can make this thing do almost anything you want. 3. The live tracking is really cool as well if someone is on a computer and wants to see exactly where you are. 4. The developers are very responsive in the online forums. Things that could be added: A way to see your track on a map directly in the app would be cool. I would also like to be able to see the tracks or at least locations of other devices in my family directly in the app without having to go to the website. Other than that, this is a great app.
This app has other uses By: BHatz - Jan 9, 2009 Version: 1.2.2 No this is not a good app for recovering a stolen phone (private is better for that) but it has other purposes. For example let's say you are on your planning a suprise party and you a driving the birthday boy to the party you can allow the party throwers to know where you are so they know when you'll arrive.
Or you can use it as a tracking device. Turn on the app, hide your phone in someones car and find out where they go (which is good for overprotective fathers).
Be creative.
To all you negative reviewers By: Kheirons - Apr 22, 2009 Version: 1.2.2 How about reading the description first... No it doesn't work on something that doesn't have the GPS hardware, no it isn't a GPS. It is simply a tracker. Works as it was designed and I've had no problems. I've even got the tracker running on my Facebook so my friends can see where I am. It also states you must register to get a device key. So again, read the notes and stop complaining because your lack of ability to read the description caused you to think the software did other things.
Pretty much perfect! By: rwizard - Nov 26, 2008 Version: 1.2.2 In spite of a few grumbles by folks who don't understand the limitations of the platform, this is an excellent app. My son drove from college to his grandparents house yesterday, and my wife and I watched his progress on our big screen TV, complete with satellite background imagery. We were able to follow him from door to door without a hitch. All for free. How can you complain about that? (Incidentally, I bought a Zoombak prior to finding this app and ended up returning it). So, for those who want background operation - well, who doesn't ? But Apple says no, so complain to them. Thanks Instamapper, you have produced one of my top three favorite iPhone apps !
Very Cool! Don't believe the negative reviews By: Sharpshooter9x19 - Apr 9, 2009 Version: 1.2.2 For a free (or paid) app this is very cool. User agreement is straightforward: They offer it for free, and plan on offering it for free for the life of the app. They are not proponents of "Big Brother." This is simply a useful app to track your iPhone 3G. My wife uses this (at my request) to track where I am when Hiking/Running. Extra added measure of safety, and if I go for a day/multiple day hike she knows where I am & where to pick me up! Google map integration is virtually seemless. I would have paid for this, but I'm glad I didn't have to! Caveat: This is NOT a GPS replacement. Do not expect to download this and go running into the woods with nothing but your iPhone. If you're a serious hiker take your GPS with you. This is a great tool, but it's not a replacement for your Garmin.
Tested in Hawaii, New York, Los Angeles, Denver etc. By: ElCapitain - Apr 9, 2009 Version: 1.2.2 Yes it works great other places too! I'm a pilot and I've used this appl. (on the ground of course) in many parts of the US. It just works perfect! I use it on the iPhone 3g (2.2) and it never has done anything but perform as promised. As any app. does it uses power and will not run in background, but that is an Apple restriction and not this apps. doing. Get it, use it and you will like it!
Awesome! By: flyinbyu20 - Mar 28, 2009 Version: 1.2.2 I take it with me when I flight instruct and it maps my entire flight for when I get back. There are some dead spots where I lose 3g, but the app still takes the GPS info and stores it until it gets the signal again(most of the time). Speed is exactly what the aircraft shows and altitude is about 100 feet off. I love it, and its FREE. Only con, 2 hr flight will take the iPhone battery down to 20% or lower.

Lost it, Found it By: Trailspinner - Nov 1, 2008 Version: 1.1 This is a true story: I dumped my mountain bike one fall day and lost my phone due to an unzipped bag and piles of leaves. I didn't discover it for a couple of miles. When I back tracked, I was unable to locate it. I had this app installed and on. I went home found where it was on the website, transferred the lat/long to my hand held and returned the next day. When I got to the co-ordinates, I called with another phone and found I was standing 10 feet from my iPhone. Aside from finding that a racoon had tried to eat it, (it has a case on it), and the battery was almost dead, it was working perfectly. This free app saved me hundreds.
Excellent Program By: Charlie Vitale - Oct 28, 2008 Version: 1.1 This is a great program that does exactly what it says. It will locate your phone and broadcast the location to a map. You are able to give out the URL or embed the map into your own web page. It's fast and works as promised. The only problem is Apple's limitation of not being able to run in the background, again that's Apple's problem not InstaMapper's. I can't wat to see what else they are going to do with this!
Works as promised - AND FREE!!! By: philipr26 - Oct 25, 2008 Version: 1.1 I was finally able to test this program and am so impressed with how well it works!! I tested tracking the driving route we took going to dinner on Friday night and it was SPOT ON!! My use for this program is to come up with routes for my scooter club to take group rides. That always involves figuring out a route and directions, then testing - and trying to remember! This will take care of all that for me!! The only limitation is good wireless coverage but have not run into that as of yet. THANK YOU InstaMapper!!
Perfect By: stevec490 - 8-Jun-2009 Version: 1.2.2 This application does exactly what it says. It works great, and almost everyone that gave it a bad review obviously didn't read the description.. And all the people that have iPod touches that are shocked that it doesn't work are insane.. It will work if there is a wifi connection! What, you think they're going to make a gps appear and work out of the blue? You should all have your reviews removed for being dumb.. This app should cost money.. I would pay ten dollars for this.
Great app! I use it almost every day. Don't pay attention to the low ratings. By: SteveHiggs - 4-Jun-2009 Version: 1.2.2 I've read most of the low star reviews here and so far not a single one raises a valid point. This app does exactly what is says and does it very well especially for a FREE app. When I go out for a bike ride or hop on the Greyhound I open this app and let it track me, this way my family can see online where I am. If they need to meet me somewhere they can see how far I am from the destination etc. Very handy app and no extra bells and whisles thus loading time is kept to a minimum. Keep up the great work InstaMapper! As for other reviewers: Please read the description fully and try the app before reviewing!
A great alternative to FINDMESPOT By: St. Catharines - 19-Mar-2009 Version: 1.2.2 I thought about getting a SPOT device a few times but it only reports every 10 minutes. A plane can travel pretty far in 10 minutes. SPOT will work with no cell coverage but all of my flying is in areas with cells.
I used this while flying the other day and when I came home I got on the website to see my track. It showed that the phone was still updating and still at the airport. I called the flying club and was told that the plane was just taking off. I went back to the PC to see the plane on the runway. I was able to watch the whole flight and head out to the airport to get my phone when I saw the plane returning.
Simple. Easy. Works. By: jj.b. - 29-Mar-2009 Version: 1.2.2 Quite simply an awesome app! Sign up on their website, install the app on your iPhone and it just works. It works fine whilst the phone screen is off / locked (this is a relatively new feature but works well) as long as the app was the app open when the screen turned off / locked - ie: it is still in the foreground. You can still listen to music whilst running as the iPhone iPod player can run in the background. Well done guys on writing a very easy to use and fuss-free application!
Excellent App By: Baronsilas - 15-Mar-2009 Version: 1.2.2 I have had this on my phone since it first came out but used it properly for the first time today. I left the PC running and went on a 17km mountain bike run with friends, the wife could see exactly where we were at any time (not always a good thing though :) Got home and saved the route which saves all your data at each way point, time, speed & altitude. I then exported it straight into Google earth without a hitch, where it will play your trip back in a time scale to suit you. I then emailed it to the guys. In short a very useful app which is easy to use. Brilliant!
I'd pay for this app. By: Talkingtojoey - Sep 30, 2008 Version: 1.1 I took an 8 day road trip and used this app along with the embedded map on my blog and the app functioned flawlessly for me. The map in my blog was always up to date, so much so that friends would call me and ask about whatever location I was in at that moment.
Also, the website let's you export your gps data which can then be loaded onto Google Earth to display your whole path, which is very cool for a posterity-type thing.
I wish the app could run in the background, but that's no fault of the developers; that's an Apple issue.
I can't say enough about this app and how simple it was to use and how much more interactive it made my trip for my friends and family who followed along. I would've payed money for this app for sure. And I'll certainly be using it on all my road trips.
Coolest little tracking application By: RyanAlberta - 24-Nov-2008 Version: 1.2.2 I got this with the intent of getting a speed readout. Not only does it report current speed, but it does lat/long coordinates and heading. I can now share with my friends road trips between cities and... don't tell the cops this.. but I can race and record fast highway travel times when speeding and using my radar detector :). I can't wait to take a huge road trip and record everything with the iPhone and GPS Tracker! :D
