I live in the south west of England and use motion X frequently for my bike excursions. Love being able to track and share my routes in google maps and all the other geeky information! I think the iPod update is useful. Saves having to navigate out of the app if you are listening to music. It's not perfect, but it's cheap and works well enough for me. I think people that are moaning are forgetting this is multitasking phone, and should be using a dedicated navigation tool.

One of the most truly useful and well built apps.
I use it biking to record my trail & distance and it has REPLACED my bike computer in telling me current speed & mileage. Cannot wait to see what else they come up with! This is a very powerful App., obviously written by real programers.
Scary accurate GPS. Highly recommend this App for biking. I bought a RAM Mount to hold it, great mount and was only $15.
Needed updates:
-Takes to long to use the iPod page (loads & loads & loads), Can only access PLAYLISTS, and NOT your entire music collection. MUSIC function to hard to use as is.
-Would like to see the PHOTO section upgraded. Needs to have MULTIPLE photos inside one track displayed.
-Would like to be able to CUSTOMIZE main screen layout.

MotionX adds real GPS functions to the iPhone

I've been using GPS for everything from sea kayaking and climbing to auto navigation for years, and while MotionX isn't going to replace a special purpose GPS for these uses, it does a great job of providing standard GPS functions like position (lat/long), heading, speed, etc., storing track and point data, and they've packaged it to blend seamlessly, (more or less) with the iPhone's other capabilities and great UI.
So I can do a walk or run in a new city, listening to my tunes, store my track plot, along with speed, distance, time and photos to capture places I want to remember and have a great record of my wanderings in the city. Sweet.
So ignore the whiners and make use of real GPS capabilities on your iphone.

Down loaded this yesterday as have started riding to try and get fit. Put this in my rucksack and went off for a ride. It was great tracked me all the way round our local park, took a photo of my wife with our new bikes, uploaded it to facebook so I could check it out when I got home. By the time I got home about a 10 minute drive I already had two comments on facebook about the photograph and the route. Well worth the money.

This app is great. I've taken it in cycling trips, hikes in the mountains and canoe journeys. It's fun to look at the path you took when you finish your trip. Also, I find it to be quite accurate. I was at a mountain pass at there was a sign that read 2200 metres, and this app showed 2198 metres. It's also accurate when calculating distance travelled and speed. You can enter "waypoints" and it will tell you your estimated arrival time based on your direction and speed. Being able to take pictures within the app, and to have those pics "geo tagged" (so you can see on a map where you took the pic) is neat. The only improvement I'd like to see is to show ALL pics taken located on the map/track when you email or facebook a track. Currently, it only shows one picture per track.

U get MORE than what you pay for!!!!!

I hike, bike, & geocache. I use this app for everything. I have a $400 Garmin handheld, as well as a Tomtom, and have used various other name brand equipment. This software allows me to do it all! The only downside (not the softwares fault) is that my iphone isn't weatherproof. I KNOW GPS and this is by far the BEST GPS software for the iPhone. A microscopic price for all the features, utilities, and uses ! ! ! !

I LOVE this application from MotionX, and it goes EVERYWHERE with me. MotionX GPS lets me keep track of my treks, my favorite waypoints, and even let's me capture pictures along the way. Best of all, I can easily share ALL of this with my friends on Facebook! Try the facebook application for MotionX-GPS and you will be able to add and share via your facebook profile. I like going place and I LOVE sharing all of the interesting things I see - MotionX GPS lets me do that. I can do ALL of this with my iPhone thanks to MotionX GPS!! Keep up the great job motionx!!

If you are like me, the lite version of this app is excellent. There really isn't much reason to buy the full app. I did so solely to support the developers. Hopefully, any new features will go to the full version buyers. I'd like to see some 3D or mountain shading in future versions but as-is this app is outstanding and it blows away my "true" GPS from Magellan. It's almost as good as my father's $500 Garmin Oregon in features.

I'm an airline pilot and have carried a GPS for running and cycling all over the world on my trips. With MotionX, now I just take the iPhone. With the addition of real time maps in ver. 3.0 and a terrific bike mount from Ram Mounts, this thing rocks. My only issue was battery life, but contacting MotionX solved that (they got back to me same day). By pressing the iPhone Sleep button during the ride, the GPS continues to track my progress with little battery drain. I can stop along the way, press the Wake button and view my map position and stats. Today I rode over 4 hours and had 1/3 battery remaining. Then it's a snap to email your ride at the end so anyone can view it in Google Maps with a single click. Unbelievable.

Do not leave home without it.

I never ride my trike without this app running. I plot out courses and import courses my buddies have planned out. Accurate and dependable. You can even follow your gps directions without an Internet connection. Combine this app with a gum pro battery and you have a serious bike gps that will run a good 14 hours. I had only one complaint and the last update fixed that issue. The daytime mode was the perfect solution. Keep the updates coming. MotionX is amazing.

A couple of the reviews I read made a few misleading comments. First, it never was advertised as a turn by turn GPS. It does what it said it would do and that's just tracking where you have been and how to get back to where you started. Second, if you pay the couple of bucks for the paid app you will not see scrolling msgs. It's only on the free apps. I got the free addition at first and quickly upgraded to the paid apps. And third, someone asked about being able to jump directly to other screens. If you hold down either red arrow it will bring up all the screens and just slide your finger up to the one you one and release. The person with the biggest complaint must work for Garmin. That's all, folks!!

Now updated to version 5.1 and this app gets better and better, this is worth so much more than currently being charged for and worth every single penny. The interace is stunning and it is so easy to use......and of course does exactly what it is supposed to.
I don't understand some of the negative reviews for this. I use this application on a weekly basis for Geocaching in the UK, I have found it to be reliable and accurate. It is so easy to use. If you want a GPS application then you can't go wrong with this and for this price it is stunning!!!!

Good GPS functionality for an iPhone app

I have used Garmin GPS units for many years, an am experienced with how to use them to there maximum functionality. This app is by far better than any other phone GPS app I have used. I think some users are expecting turn-by-turn navigation. I am looking forward to seeing this app support the magnetic compass in the new 3G S. The cached maps is a very good feature, since I usually use a gps in remote areas. My three gripes: 1) I would like to see this app import waypoints from Garmin Mapsource, I have hundreds of waypoints I would like to have on hand, but don't want to spend hours entering them by hand. 2) Also the GPS responds kind of slow, its probably to blame on the iPhone hardware. 3) The max speed needs some sort of filtering, I have seen a max speed of 400 MPH when driving in town with the app in use. Overall I would have been happy to pay $10-15 for this app, since it has the functionality of $100 handheld GPS.

This is an amazing and powerful, feature rich device. I am a hiker, runner, biker. This thing is the answer to my prayers. Full featured GPS. Share and view tracks in Google Maps and Google Earth. Geo-tagged photos. It is amazing that my phone can now do everything a GPS that costs hundreds of dollars can do - at $2.99??! Hey you critics out there, read that price tag - the decimal point is in the right place - Two Dollars and Ninety Nine cents!! A no-brainer. This thing rocks.

I've had this application for almost as long as it's been out. I remember thinking that it was good, but I really needed the Military Grid Reference System. Recently, I was tagging along with some soldiers who were practicing on a land navigation course. I opened up MotionX and happily saw that the program had been updated to include MGRS. I tested it on a difficult land nav course and it was right on the money. The developers have never stopped improving their product; I highly recommend it.

Satellite maps

I bought this app sometime ago because it did what I wanted and knew they would put in satellite maps sooner or later. R3 did just that and it was perfect. Now the maps are gone. This is an absolute deal breaker. I hopethis is just a bug. Better be! Update: it's most likely google wants a share of the sales. Come up with an upgrade version that integrates the maps. Integration with malsing maps would be brilliant!

This is the first time in a year of owning an iphone that I have written a review. I have tried 5 different gps navigation apps for iPhone. This one is better by leaps and bounds than any other. Contour maps are great. Each zoom level of each map has a scale legend, making is easy to quickly estimate distances whether you are on road or on foot. No other nav app offers this feature that I have seen. MotionX staff is receptive to feedback. They regularly push out updates and new features. BUY THIS APP before trying any other GPS app.

Just used the app for the first time today on my bike and wow am I impressed!!! This is a MUST BUY APP!!!
Firstly, the interface is flawless. There are no hangs or glitches, and for £1.79 you can get so much more data on your routes than a top of the range Garmin! You can view your current location, see a compass (GPS compass - you must be moving for it to work. Also the GPS compass is accelorometer assisted, therefore is pretty accurate), see 3 different types of maps (with points of interest), current altitude (to the nearest 20ft) and so much more. As you progress on your route you can use the 'MotionX Stopwatch' which will show your average speed, max speed (I hit 36mph on the bike!), total distance etc. You can also set waypoints by just double tapping anywhere on the map, letting you see your waypoint bearing/distance, time to waypoint, ETA etc. You can also take Geotagged photos anywhere along the route which then get embedded into your route data.
Once you have finished your route you just tap Save and all the data is saved for review. The data is never deleted unless you choose to delete it, and any number of route data can be saved. There is one touch posting of your route data (speed, distance etc.), and a link to Google Maps showing your route, to Facebook and Twitter. You can also email up to 5 reciepents at once with all your route data (no Mail account is required on the iPhone, data goes through MotionX servers).
In terms of the data you get when you upload your route data, you get your speed, distance etc., start and finishing waypoints, and most importantly, a Google Earth file/a link to Google Maps which shows your route plotted on the map. The route data was so accurate you could actually see that i had travelled on both sides of the road! Any photos you took during the route are also uploaded.
One thing that is quite important however is the strengh of the GPS. If you live in ye olde England the GPS can be weak in some areas and, granted, the GPS signal was only lost once or twice during my bike ride (through woods and open areas). If the GPS signal is lost, but then regained, the app automatically adds the extra distance travelled, so there isnt really much of a loss.
Overall this app is truely brilliant and I recommend any keen Cyclist, Walker'ist, Driver'ist, Boater'ist etc. to get this app now!

I've never felt the need to write a review for an App, but this is such a great addition to the iPhone. No other App integrates so many of the iPhone's strengths in to one package. Its ability to merge location with messaging, geo-tagging and tracking along with iPod features and phone calls just are quite brilliant. It doesn't replace a full-fledged stand-alone GPS for my needs, but when used in conjunction with other devices it is an excellent companion.

Alternate skins is a GREAT idea, gimme more!

I checked out the daylight skin and it is definitely easier to read at a glance than the dark grey scheme they've had since day 1. Now, may I make a skin request pretty please :-) I would love something that looks a bit more slick and streamlined, really simplified. You know, like an Apple product, minimalist but bright, easy to read. Bigger buttons if possible, although I know there is a lot to cram in there...
An easier thing would be some alternate colors. Personally I like orange a lot, maybe a white/orange/brown scheme. That would be my vote anyway.

Awesome feature. I can import tracks and waypoints that I've downloaded from the internet, so I can actually follow trails and navigate to places that I've never been to before. Now we're talking! Just google up some gpx files, there's tons of stuff online. I imported the whole Appalachian trail, and a bundle of all the hot springs in California, just for starters. NICE!
