This is the future of social networking on mobile devices... | Brilliant start.

Once I get more and more friends on this, it will be one fun, efficient, and amazing app! I am very impressed! I love making comments on a friend's status, and searching for nearby restaurants.
The app works great, is well organized, and really captures what social networking will be on mobile devices. It's a great start, but I look forward to more updates and features to come! Bravo, guys, bravo!
A cooler twitter for mobile phones
By: swemoney - Jul 18, 2008
I like this app a lot. It's very twitter-esque in what it does but so much cooler. You can take a picture to add to your updated status and view the locations of where all your friends last were on loopt. The Facebook application adds even more neat stuff like being able to see a friends history of updates right on an interactive map. I intend on recommending this app to all my friends with iPhones.
P.S. Those of you asking for an auto updating application are out of luck. Apple does not allow any application to remain active in the background. It would be a terrible drain on your battery if the GPS as active ALL the time. It really only takes about 5 seconds to just launch the app to update your application.
P.S.S. I don't know where the SMS spam complaint is coming from. I think a misinformed digg crowd was told to review this app and they all did like the sheep they are. I haven't had any problems with loopt sending out SMS invites to users I didn't explicitly specify to send them to. Don't listen to the sheep, give it a shot.
For the most part, a great app

This app really is only worth it if you have many friends with the iPhone who also have loopt. It also would be nice to have an option to keep it tuning in the background or update your location every few minutes, a long as you could turn this feature off I think it would be beneficial. Also lately I've noticed that when I ping someone (sent a message requesting a friends location), when they log in to loopt and receive a pong (the text with their location) it's if their last known location, not where they are now. Only when I log into loopt will it show their current location. A simple fix to this may be to delay the pongs for an extra 5 seconds to let the phone catch up to the user's current position. Other than that it's a great app, could use some instructions for those that are confused on how to work it. I use this app daily and love it! If you're interested in this app but think it's creepy having people know where you are, it's not like that. Only people you add as friends will know where you are and you can also choose to hide yourself from everyone in the settings. As I said before, this app is only useful and fun if you have many friends with loopt too!
Solid app, needs a bit of work. Updated.

I love using this app to keep in touch with my family across the country. The one gripe I have is that it crashes a lot when using the camera. A way I found around this is to take the photo before entering the app. Works, but it should be addressed with an update. Other than that I love it, and it works as advertised.
Update: The new version of the app adds things that can't be removed. I am not on facebook, so the "add facebook friends" is always on the screen. Also the "there may be more friends" always seems to be there. Combine that with the ad at the top and over 50% of my screen is eaten up by junk. Please fix this on the next update!!!
Stellar app - lots of features in a functional package

The Loopt iPhone app is well on its way to being one of my favorites, and that's even before adding enough friends to really use everything that's available. The Loopt Map is much more convenient than Google Maps for finding where I am (it auto-locates you), and it beautifully integrates Yelp reviews for the on-screen area-- also, unlike some similar apps, scrolling and zooming are very well done. Loopt's "What's Up" feature offers the option to integrate with Twitter, allowing Loopt to sit at the top of a chain of updates (if Twitter is then pointed to Facebook status), and it integrates location information and an optional per-update photo. Top marks!
excellent map based app.

this app makes is super easy to network and connect with friends. It's like Facebook + GPS + yelp rolled into one. It is super easy to keep a journal of what you're doing and post pics of what you're up to. the feature i like the best is sharing locations of favorite bars/clubs/restaurants with your friends. it has a good, logical user interface, so it will only take you two minutes to be up and running and connecting with your friends. download it and see for yourself.
Great app and so much fun to use!

I love this app! It is so easy to use, the map is super clear, and I love that it makes me more connected with my friends. No location problems or SMS annoyances (just turn this feature off) for me. I also appreciate that the company has taken into consideration my privacy and security - letting me know that loopt has been installed on my phone, and giving me the option to choose who can see my location. Thanks loopt!!
Sooo Many Possibilities!

I can finally update Facebook, Twitter, and Loopt with my current status and location all from a single place!!! And there are Yelp reviews that have come in handy more than once. The UI also has a cool look and feel. My only wish is for background updating, but I don't think any iPhone apps can do that yet. Also, I'm not sure what all this talk about SMS messages is about. There's a verification message when you sign up, but after that, it's just alerts stuff like when you receive a friend invitation. I found a way to turn all of them off in the Settings menu, and I haven't received a single SMS since registration (and I have 10 or so Loopt friends). Can't wait for the next version!

This app is amazing. Great way to make friends and talk with them via email. I have friends thousands of miles away and this app allows me to see where they are and what they're doing (if they post it of course).
The only thing I have a problem with is if you want to add a friend you have to give them your phone number in order to send an invite. I love making friends, but I'm not willing to give up my phone number to a complete stranger I've only met on a networking app. Maybe change it to an email address instead? Or have it be like the other networking sites and let us request a friend and be able to accept or deny them.
Really cool app!

This is one of the few applications I use on a regular basis! It's so much better now that a bunch of my friends are on it. One day I was sitting in JFK--my flight was delayed--and I opened up Loopt and found out another friend was a few gates away!! It helped me kill some time while I was waiting for my flight to board. Good job Loopt!!
Some people said that it's only for the iPhone but I just checked their website and it says it's available on a bunch of different phones, not just the iPhone!! My friends with blackberries really like it as well!
By: Chris.Emry - Jul 17, 2009
I love this app. I have a friend that traveled across the country & I was able to follow as well as see pics of his travel. As far as the SMS that many spoke of, you can turn that all off in the preferences in the app so no big deal there. It is accurate as well & & have the regular iPhone & not the 3G so that says a lot. With my home location it knows my local within yards of where I am at. Cool app. I say get it, & best of all it is free.
This is a great app! Also, it does NOT use SMS for data.
By: vafarmboy - Jul 13, 2008
True, it uses an SMS or two to verify your identity, but after that you can disable all SMS messages. (They're used when people ping you, want to friend you, or to let you know you have a new comment.) All data goes over WiFi or the cellular network.
Loopt is great to find out who's near you and, if they've posted an update, what they're doing. It's even fun to see what friends not near you are up to. Being able to take pictures on the fly or use one from your roll is great. The Yelp integration is fantastic.
Also, this is NOT a stalking app! Only people who friend you can find you (you can turn off your location if you want to hide, or hide it from specific friends), and you add friends by knowing their phone number. Just be careful who you give your phone number to! ;-)
Great app! Now I can update twitter while seeing where friends are!
By: PandaChi - Jul 11, 2008
Don't know what people are talking about, haven't received any SMS spam at all - you can go into the settings page and turn off all SMS notifications and then you don't need to worry about it ever again, unless you want to get a txt whenever a friend invites you (I know I don't, especially since AT&T charges $5 for 200 msgs now).
Love the yelp places nearby, and how I can see which of my friends have left a comment whenever they like a restaurant!
Great way to keep in touch with friends
By: macaddiict - Nov 12, 2008
I love Loopt! It is a fun way to feel connected to those friends that mauve you don't get to see as often as you'd like. Give it a try - of course, it isn't very useful if you don't know a few people with iPhones who will try it with you!
For those of you worried about giving out your phone number, realize it is because Loopt will send you alerts about your friends on Loopt by text message ... For instance, you get a text when a friend comments on one of your Loopt entries. Apple is featuring the Loopt app on some of their iPhone commercials -- I don't think you have to worry about the company going off and selling your number on something.
By: Lovestrong - Jan 28, 2009
This app is pretty cool if you ask me. It's simple n fun. You don't have to know exactly where your friends are unless you being a stalker!! Weirdo. But generally seeing where their are about is pretty neat. Commenting friends is fun to do and everyone that you haveon your friends list that are Colman can add in their opinion or nonscence too. It's just simple I'd you don't like it then deal with it. Cool app.
Loopt is cool :)
By: wendyness - Jan 26, 2009
Seeing where my friends are is pretty cool! I don't know what that other reviewer is talking about, but Loopt is not SMS based. They give you the option of being alerted by SMS when stuff happens (new journal comments, pings, etc.), but you can turn it off in Settings. I think the "Who's on Loopt" button is really cool so I can see which friends are already using it and add them. The Yelp reviews stuff is cool as well!
Awesome App! Friends and I are having fun, and it works. We're hooked!
By: ChewyDuder - Oct 6, 2008
My friends and I started messing around with this last week, and we love it. I think we are hooked. While we are always checking in with each other for stupid stuff, we are also using it to find each other, and have fun. The other night we were out at a bar that had great live music and was hopping, so we posted a "What's Up" with photo, and several of our friends met up with us using the map to my friend feature. Its really fun, and works well. Non of us have had any stability problems etc. with it. It allows you to use the gps to know where you are, type in what you are doing, and even add photos of you doing it. The ability to TURN OFF the notifications makes it way less creapy than when we originally heard about this... Great App!
By: imagemaxdds - Dec 28, 2008
Hey, this review is for the many reviewers here who complain that loopt doesn't automatically update everyone's location every minute of the day. Did it ever occur to you that not everybody wants the whole world knowing where they are every minute of the day? That's called privacy, you know! When you want to know where somebody is at the moment, PING them! Then there's an instant update for each party. This is a COOL app, just like the commercial shows.
Great App, if you have an IQ over 80.
By: zooompilot2008 - Sep 1, 2008
Great app, and works fine on the iPhone v2.0.2 build 3G.
Now, welcome to your IPHONE...NO 3rd party applications work in the background...NONE. This is a limitation of Apple's IPHONE and only default applications such as mail and SMS can run in the background. The authors of Loopt cannot do anything about that and
if you have not figured that out after the first 5 minutes of owning your IPhone, then I am left wondering how you were smart enough to even turn the IPhone on!
Next, Loopt is an application that utilizes GPS to pinpoint your location and the location of your friends that YOU invite that ALSO have a GPS equipped IPhone. It should be common sense to anyone with an IQ above that of grass that you would need a GPS enabled IPHONE for this application to work. No, Loopt won't help you to track your friends without an IPhone 3G! Obviously if you have a first generation IPhone it doesn't have a GPS...get my point? Complaints that Loopt doesn't work on an IPOD touch or IPHONE v1 scare me. It's like blaming Ferrari because it won't start up without there being gas in the gas tank!
Next, I saw a post that warned that you can be tracked via Loopt. That was the scariest post of all. If you LET someone track you, you will be tracked. It's like playing hide and go seek and you yelling out 'HERE I AM!' and then warning people not to
yell out your location or you will be found...seriously? The IPhone has been my first foray into the Apple world but reading the reviews at the Appstore such as "it should not be $1.99 it should be Free", "how come this GPS tool doesn't work on my Texas instruments
calculator?" makes me believe that some of the most whiney, immature, unintelligent people use Apple Products simply because they are easy and require no thought.
As Einstein said: "Better to be silent and be thought of as a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."
Despite other reviews, This app is truly the best app on my iPhone
By: hawaiianfool - Dec 24, 2008
This is one of the apps I use most on my iPhone. I like to tag where I've been so I can see all my locations on a map. It also has great integration with Yelp and Facebook so I can find nearby places and update my status. This app actually became very handy when my friend from LA visited me at my Dorm. I couldn't give him a real address for my dorm, so I told him to pull up the app and click on "directions to me." It was much easier than trying to describe what my building looked like and all that stuff which I'm sure everyone's been through. Awesome App!! I just wish all my friends used it. :/
