So what if it misses a few. This has saved me countless times. Standing in line at one restaurant wondering what else is in the area? Covered. Just place a couple calls to find out what's open and available. The restaurant reviews help also. It bailed me out on Christmas eve when the grocery store messed up our order for live lobsters. Got a list of nearby grocery stores, called them and rounded up the missing lobsters.

Shake the device from side to side to activate a hidden fucntion called Augmented Reality. It allows you to hold the camera up to world and the reviews for nearby businesses appear overlaid right on the store front!
My hat goes off to the people at Yelp by sneaking this feature into the app store right under the reviewers' noses. Apple has gone too far with the pettiness in app/update rejections for things like icon design and forcing devs to remove functions at the thread of removing the application from the store. Yelp is my Underground Railroad of the app store!
Best of all, the app is free so Apple doesn't get any money from downloading this app.

First, I agree with Some1Else's review. It is completely unfair that people are rating this app so poorly simply because Yelp had the insight to provide an updated version notwithstanding complaints about users who have 'jail-broke' their iPhone.
I personally love this application and encourage people to see past some of the unfair reviews and to try it for yourself. I really enjoy the personal reviews of restaurants in cities which I am unfamiliar with. I also really like the way you can filter the search results by cost, proximity, and by which restaurants are open.
This app is very cleverly designed!

Robert Scoble has posted instructions on how to activate this new Easter Egg:
Download the new Yelp app (came out yesterday). So you shake your iPhone 3 times. That activates a feature called Monocle. A message should come up if you activated it. A blue box will come up saying “the Monocle has been activated.” It will create a button in the top right corner. Now you should be able to look at the bars, restaurants, etc. Only works on iPhone 3GS.
AWESOME.

Listen to me carefully! This is the only app to do this on the app store right now. Download this app and shake it three times vigorously or until you get a notification. Then enjoy the next step in what all apps should have. only works with the 3G S so If you don't have a 3G S then don't bother trying this. You ask why? Perhaps? Because the app needs the compass on the 3G S to determine where it's at. Do it now!!

This app is great and I've been using it since it came out. Every new version brings a ton of great features. I was using the web site a year before I was using the app in order to find restaurants that I wanted to try. You can read reviews by people who actually eat at the restaurant.
Unfortunately some of those that have reviewed this app are expecting Emeril to pop out of the phone as a hologram and tell them where to eat. Those are the same reviews that I skip over when looking at restaurant reviews, they are whiners.

How does this have three stars!? This app is amazing, it shows you reviews, pics, times and directions including maps and written directions. I was searching for the nearest Jamba Juice and it provided me with a map and on the map it showed my car and a line to JJ. All I had to do was follow the line, and it tracked my car as I was driving, so I could see if I was going the wrong direction. This thing is awesome, everyone should have it.

I had never used the onlive version of yelp, but I downloaded this app to try it out.
I loved it from the get-go.
It simply works! I use it on the go 90% of the time. The first time I used it to find the nearest Costco and after reading a couple of reviews I went to the costco who averaged best between distance and reviews and loved it. I clicked on "directions to business" and my iphone's map application loaded up within a second with driving directions to costco. While at costco I wanted to go to a Target nearby and it found it for me. Since then I've been hooked. I use it to get business #'s, addresses, directions, and of course reviews.
I only wish I could write reviews from the iphone as I don't utilize the web app. I've found quite a few good (and not so good) restaurants I'd like to review while I'm waiting to be served. I would love to be able to review on the go.
Any who, I love yelp! Give it a try. It's free and it just works. By the way, the app has never crashed on me and I've had it for a while now.

Absolutely amazing! Any business, any restaurant, any Dr. or Dentist, all at your fingertips! Its all there in the YELP! No need for yellow pages any longer. So user friendly and accessible to all other needs you may have in your I phone.. Once I locate the business I'm searching for, I can readily make it a contact, or get directions with a map, (of course). Really a time saving device, with an infinite amount of information.

first of all @Some1Else, there are people who doesnt have an iphone, and what if they dont want to pay $5 just to upgrade 3.1?? have u ever thought of that? ipod touch users upgrade arent free you know....yes i agree with you about the jailbroken thing but u dont see me complaining, i still have the old 3.0 version and i have my own reasons, but before you talk crap like you know everything.. cuz you dont. As for the people complaining, i dont see why you should rate this one star just cause it doesnt work, actually it DOES WORK only for the 3.0 users, as long as you have it on your itunes application, it will stay there forever..unless u deleted it, i think this app is great and very helpful, i use this frequently and even visit the yelp site a lot. so if you guys have nothing to say but complain, visit the Yelp support instead.

I have started figuring out just how valuable the Yelp App is. It takes some time to figure out but that is only because it DOES so much. I love that you can bookmark places that you have been to or want to go to and write a little note on them. It's great for when you have no idea where to go but then you can pull out your iPhone, GPS your location and there you have it, a bunch of places pop up. Or you go to your bookmarked locations and you realize you are standing right next to the restaurant you wanted to go to weeks ago but never set a date. I'm very excited to see what the people at Yelp come up with next with updates to the iPhone app and their website. Great job!

This app succeeds marvelously at one simple and important task: It tells you what restaurants are nearby.
For those seeking full yelp functionality on the iPhone, try using Safari to browse the actual site. Because rather than making a clone of their website, Yelp instead created a streamlined app that fully takes advantage of the iPhone's locational pinpointing to identify good eats in the vicinity. When I'm in the mood for food, I'd rather use this simple app on my iPhone than access the actual website on my laptop.
This app has saved me time, money, and sanity. Kudos to accomplishing well a task at the center of Yelp's philosophy.

A boon for travelers!!

I love this app!! I'm in DC on business, and I need a Post Office; I need a drugstore; I need an ATM. Locate . . . search . . . bingo!! Of course, Yelp! can also guide you to local restaurants--in fact, comparing it to other programs using the neighborhood where I live, Yelp! is better at pulling up the little local places than most--but lots of other programs can get you to a restaurant. It's the ability to find other local resources when traveling in an unfamiliar city that makes Yelp! really shine.

I love this Yelp app. Gives me access to my bookmarks, and helps me find good stuff nearby quickly.
There are a couple of things I wish it had that yelp.com has:
1) Moving map. When you use "Nearby" in this app, you can pull up a map and see your results, unfortunately, the map doesn't move around, to change your location easily. On yelp.com, you can move the map and zoom in/out and the results are updated accordingly. To get simliar functionality on my phone, I have to go back to my search results and change the filter options to a broader/narrower area of search, and possibly manually type in a new location (even though it could just be a couple miles off the map.)
2) Bookmark notes: I can view bookmarks, and the notes I've attached for each one. I can bookmark places I want to try or review, but I can't leave notes or say "To try" or "To review" and I can't tell if I've bookmarked something as such. Not having those options defeats the purpose of having them at all, because now I have to leave my self a note to review or to try in the note portion, but I can't from my phone. :(
To me #2 is something that should really be addressed and #1seems like it might be pretty hard to do, but all in all this app is one of my favorites.

I love this application. It is not only great for finding stores, food etc. anywhere you currently are, but it also works great with the GPS function in the 3G phone to lead you right to the location. We have GPS already in one of our cars, but I use my iphone instead. Also if you are already a Yelper it is great because you can provide a review on the fly. It is better if you just want to provide a short review, but I guess it depends on how well you use the iphone keyboard. Love it!

What a gem! Small, intimate & friendly! Almost like having dinner with family! The food is fresh and fabulously delicious! The menu offers fresh organic food and changes regularly so there is always a new dish to try! An added bonus is the artwork on display. The current artist's work is beautiful, creative, innovative. He is changing his show every 2 weeks, all the more reason make Cafe Carolina a regular favorite.

The perfect location aware app

This is the app I really wanted for iPhone 2.0 long before I knew it existed. It has a nice interface and makes it easy to find what you are looking for. I think it would work best with a GPS enabled iPhone, because it gives me errors when I ask it to find places within 0.3 miles of my current location. I assume this is because it doesn't know my location with that precision. Also, I wish I could sort the results by rating or distance, that would save me the 5 seconds it takes to scan through all of the losers for the right place. But overall I highly recommend this application, and Yelp as a whole.

Quintessential iPhone App

This is the app I go to to show someone what an iPhone can do. Effortlessly list nearby restaurants (or car washes, florists, etc) and, if you have a 3Gs, even use Monocle to show where those businesses are relative to where the iPhone is pointing. Of course, it's integrated with Maps and the phone. And the user ratings are typically ballpark.
Since I'm using OS 3.1 I don't have the problems some have noted.
