Units is a simple unit conversion utility for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Unlike most other unit converters, Units looks and works a lot like a calculator. You punch in digits and Units does the conversion on the fly.
Units remembers the last used conversion units for each mode. Modes that you use often can be saved for quick access via 3 user-assignable buttons.
Currency exchange rates are updated once a day from our server, but you can also do a manual update when you want to.
- Supports most common units, and a few specialized conversions
- Go green: Calculate your Carbon Dioxide emissions of your car
- Clear button can be customized to act as backspace
- Clear button changes to +/- when converting from Celsius or Fahrenheit.
- Save upto 3 often used modes to the user-assignable buttons
- Conversion happens as you type. No need to press another button
- Reverse direction of conversion with one press of a button
- Currency exchange rates are automatically downloaded once a day
- Shake to clear the screen
- Rotate device to compare values across units
A great conversion tool that keeps getting better
By: paradoxxx - Aug 16, 2008
I gave this app five stars when I first got it. It worked really nice. Simple yet nice. I did find that I wasn't able to use it for celsius temps below zero but in the update that was all taken care of. There was also a pressure conversion added which I use at work as well. Unfortunately the inches of mercury doesn't do a negative number like the earlier version with celsius. When you have vacuum tanks and your pulling a vacuum it would be nice to have that negative aspect available to you. Please, guys lets add this to your program. I still give this program five stars. Has to be the nicest conversion tool I have used. I'm sure in time they will add more features, more conversions making it even better.
A Developer Who Listens!

I got this when it first came out and loved it. The one drawback was what others had originally posted about in the early reviews, the lack of inputing negative numbers, especially in Temperature mode, which is a must for us folks in the Great White North!
Well, with this latest release, this has now been corrected.
I also like the changes made to the Mode function that allows for quicker access to the different modes.
All in all, one of the best purchases for under a buck that I've ever spent on!
Cool converter App
By: sharkhunter - 04-Oct-2008
I've tried most (if not all) of the converter Apps and what I like about this one over all the others I've used is the simple clean classic look, the 3 buttons for your most used units, the speed it loads and how simple and quick it is to use.
This is a good example of how this type of App should be designed for the iPhone!
Note to the developer: Please do NOT change the look/ design when doing updates, it's perfect looking as it is.

This is exactly the kind of app I was hoping to see in the new App Store. It's useful, attractive, and the price is right. For 99 cents I didn't think twice, and it's no wonder you see it near the top of the most popular paid apps. I like the design of it as well. It looks good, and doesn't make frivolous use of the new Cocoa Touch widgets (like that spinning dial -- the 'star wipe' of iPhone UI -- that everyone loves to use, no matter how inappropriate). The programmable shortcuts are nice.
My one request is that I'd like the swap button to swap not only the units, but the values, as I sometimes do a chain of conversions and would like to carry the results forward.
Oh, and by the way, the "key click" feature supposedly introduced in the latest update does not work for me (I hear nothing). Doesn't really matter, just thought I'd mention it.
Great little app!

Excellent program, however I noted on pressure you list Pascals and Megapascals. I think it would be better (not just with pressure but all units) to give the base unit and perhaps another button for the prefix. I was doing a tyre pressure conversion and that is typically kPa, not a big deal, but had to use Pascals and add a few more zeros.
Additional temperature units would be good such as Rankine.
And SI units really should be spelt the English way (metre, and metric tonne is always tonne to differentiate with ton)
Other than that, the programme is rather awesome and love it. Even with these minor flaws, still worth the 99 cents and still deserves 5 stars.
Units / Break Classic
By: Jerry, SLC - Aug 6, 2008
I was reading a review that someone was concerned about the (-) signal for temperatures. Yes, you can use the ( - ) signal as well has some of the pressures units someone mentioned below. To not go through all the units hit the tools icon on upper right corner. There you can chose what you want as well to a second menu. When I download the application, at first I couldn't use the ( - ) minus signal either. I don't know what's happened, how I did that, but today some of the applications I had downloaded some weeks ago just showed up on my iPod Touch screen with a blue bar inside the icon and the word "downloading". After the process was completed, I could use the ( - ) through the [ C ] key on the Units Converter. That's nice and cool. So, my game Break Classic became faster and funnier to play with pause and sound available on screen. It didn't have this options before the downloading.
Useful, versatile, accurate converter
By: The Red Comet - Aug 2, 2008
I am quite impressed by this application. There is a huge list of units to convert, even some I've never heard of. The buttons look great, and it calculates the conversion on the fly. The unit flip button is also a smart addition, for when I mix up the order.
The only real problem I noticed was that switching between unit conversions can be a tad confusing or cumbersome, just in the way the menus are laid out.
For just a dollar, though, this app is a great deal. It is certainly the best unit converter for the iPhone at this time.
No Milliliter? Google to the rescue!
By: bigredmac - Jul 25, 2008
How embarrassing. I just downloaded this app and a friend asked me for a milliliter to fl. oz conversion. I pulled out my iPhone; and, after fiddling around for a few moments with this app, just went to google and got the answer instantly from their google calculator. If you get this app, just know that you may still need google, even for measurements like ml.
Update: I updated this to 5 stars because ml was added, and I might have been a little harsh on a 99 cent app.
Great App... Very easy to use
By: Richnel - Jul 24, 2008
I am extremely satisfied with App + the low price. Very user friendly. I see other comments about what else this App should have to make it better. I got it, how about adding every currency on earth + every possible unit conversion imaginable & ratio. Oh by the way developer, could you add the cure to all known illnesses and diseases. Could you also make my Iphone produce any known currency my little heart desires in your next update, dear sir or madaam. THANKS.....
Once again, Great App.
Favorite app so far....
By: ablopez - Jul 21, 2008
I work in a laboratory and I'm always converting units. This app is awesome. Even just to play around with. I especially love the energy converter. I was able to convert my electrical energy consumption into calories and then into "chicken pot pies". It was hilarious. OK... so it was only funny to us nerdly types. ha ha. Anyway. I love this app. The currency converter is also very useful. I hope they put out updates with more conversion factors. It could be more and more useful.
As if Apple designed it.
By: Fox O'Rian - Jul 19, 2008
Seriously, if Apple had included a unit converter app on the iPhone, this would be it. It supports 9 conversion modes presently. Weight, length, area, volume, energy, time, temperature, currency, and speed. The three shortcut buttons are very nice to have since I ALWAYS have a few things I need to find out. The design is perfect, as well. It has that 'vintage 80's calculator' feel. Anyone with a spare dollar should get this app, it's just something all iPhones will need sooner or later.
I don't normally write reviews but...
By: jmonma - Jul 18, 2008
This is such a well done and useful app that I felt compelled to write a quick review. If you travel between countries or are planning to travel ever this app is a must. This is the cleanest and best user interface that I've seen for any conversion utility. The execution is also outstanding. (there's even a button to immediately update the app with the current exchange rates!). For the price, this is the best paid app I have downloaded on the app store (and I have over 40 apps!). If you think for a second that you might need some sort of unit or currency conversion at any point, this is by far the best tool to use.
Still the best
By: Jayson767 - 08-Oct-2008
Had to add my rating to help counter balance the low ones from earlier reviews. I've tried many different conversion apps but I still find myself coming back to this one! The developers are dedicated to continuously improving the product and really do take suggestions on board for future updates. Even the home screen icon has been changed (although I preferred the original!).
The app is intuitive, has a very polished UI, and really is useful. Thanks for a terrific app guys, keep up the good work.

Units is easily one of the best and most useful applications available on the App Store. It has the look and feel of the iPhone's (or iPod Touch's) built in applications, is more useful than most of them, and can convert almost any form of measurement or currency. Units is incredibly simple to use, just select your settings (or set up some presets) and you're ready! Just input the quantity and the application converts them on-the-fly. It has a professional polish in both the overall appearance and the unique icon sets, and the developer should be congratulated for making such a visually appeasing interface instead of just taking the quick and easy route (like many other developers have) of using the iPhone's default application appearance (which would look bland, to say the least). But the most important area of any application is its usability, and in this area Units excels. Not only has the application never crashed on me, the developer seems intent on supplying updates often to add features and resolve any issues that do arise.
At $1.19 Units is a steal. Even at ten times the price it would still be a bargain! I recommend it to anyone who needs a currency or unit converter, and in fact to anyone with an iPhone or iPod Touch. Units is worth far more than the $1.19 asking price and I'm sure any iPhone and iPod Touch would readily benefit from it.
Amazing since the update!
By: Zeromus - 01-Sep-2008
I stopped using this app but since the update I'm all over it again like butter on toast, it's easily the best unit converter for the iPhone.
The Mode, To and From buttons are fixed, and now display a nice menu allowing for super quick conversions.
I logged back on to the app store and had to search for this app to write this review, I'm that impressed. Try this new version (1.4.0), you won't be dissapointed.

i like everything about it, from the calculator like interface and large numpad to the shortcut buttons. it has a very clean look, and was a pleasure to use. one thing i missed with currency conversion though is the ability to see multiple conversions at once. like if you have an amount and want to see/convert that into 2 or 3 other currencies in the screen. just a thought. anyway, by itself, it's a very good app already. great job with this.
This is what an app should be - simple, fast, useful, good looking
By: alpinelight - Sep 29, 2008
For my needs this app is essentially perfect. I use it several times every day. What I love:
- programmable shortcut buttons
- speed, look and layout of the interface is excellent
- quick toggle to reverse the conversions
- very quick selection of units (other than currencies, read below)
- with so many currencies, it would help to have an alphabetical index on the right of the scroll box (like in Apple's contact selection boxes). It's nice to convert Romanian Leu to Tunisian Dinars, but not if it slows down selection of major currency pairs.
- it doesn't have a "ruler" mode? (Or if it does, I can't find it.)
I used to use Apple's convert widget on my desktop Mac, but it is far faster and easier to pull out the iPhone and use Units instead.
As always on the App Store, there are reviews that have gone stale due to bug fixes and updates:
- Some previous reviews complained about no negative sign for temperatures - this has definitely been fixed
- Some previous complaints about not enough currencies. Not sure what you could possibly want that isn't listed... the list is very very extensive. So much so that it can take too long to select common currency pairs.

Quite simply, this is the most wonderful example of an iphone application I've yet seen. The interface is perfect, and it turns my phone into a device for which I would easily have paid $100 (for a standalone calculator-like machine). If people can keep making programs like this I'll love my phone a lot more.
My one small gripe is that I'd love to have some more conversion options, and would happily pay more for a "pro" version. Things like thermal conductivity, density, velocity, etc. Many more complicated conversions could be calculated by converting separate units, but it would sure be nice to be able to just get a quick answer when you need it.
Best $0.99 I have yet to spend in iTunes
By: poisonpop - Sep 5, 2008
I have purchased several apps and this is the best of them all for the money. I knew I wanted a conversion app for my iPhone before the App Store was even up, and there were a number to choose from. I picked this one based on the screenshots and loved it. However, the updates have made it way better than I could have hoped for, with the Data and Font conversions. My thanks to the developer for great work and a great app!
Great! But...now GREATER
By: agent00cupcakes - Aug 23, 2008
Hip hip hooray!!! Thanks for the awesome update. Especially the remembering of last units used in each mode. I can say I love it!
I bought this ap first thing when it launched--almost adore it--but I hoped the update would solve my problem, and it didn't, so I'm piping up.
It would be STUPENDOUS, if the ap remembered your settings instead of having to dial through them every time you launch it. For example, I'd love it to remember that every time I choose "Currency," that if I had last set it for US$ to Euro that that particular setting would stay there until I changed the settings again.
